Created by Tangible Intervention (the public art arm of Tangible Interaction) in collaboration with origami artist, Joseph Wu, Jelly Swarm is a public artwork for the Vancouver Aquarium in BC, Canada.  The installation features 94 folded origami jellies, each containing an LED light module, suspended from a custom aluminum structure.

Inspired by the luminescent jellies found off the British Columbia coast, Jelly Swarm mimics their natural, reactive light behaviour.  It allows visitors to excite the origami jellies into creating beautiful colour and light patterns from a touch screen controller.  When left undisturbed by the public, the jellies interact with their closest neighbours, triggering random generative displays of coloured light.

FOTB is approaching fast, more precisely in 3 weeks from today. For those that might be unaware of FOTB already, it is an annual conference in Brighton, UK bringing together some of the biggest names in Flash and digital media on the whole. This is FOTB’s fifth year! If you are a designer, developer, coder, student, manager, game developer, artist, animator or a newbie, then this conference will be for you. Don’t think that Flash on the Beach is only about Flash. Sure appearing at FOTB in the past the team has had the usual suspects – Flash, Flex, AIR, and then some; Open Frameworks, Processing, AJAX, Photoshop, After Effects, Art, Design, Illustration, Animation, Sound and many more.

I met both Mario and Andre during Flashbelt back in June and they are two of many talkers at FOTB you don’t want to miss. If you enjoy generative graphic design, you may just like Büro Destruct‘s just released “Designer” app for the iPhone and iPod/Touch. You begin with an empty library and by clicking new you are greeted with colour editor to create 5 or more colours. You can either use RGB or HSB references and this is easily converted into appropriate hex colour references. You can create palettes of 1 or 20 colours if you like, there are no limits. You are also able to name these, edit and duplicate as you need and your palettes are automatically saved.

ColorBrowser is a simple and a useful little app. Of course, it would be great to be able to export these as illustrator colour palettes but as we know getting the colours right is the hard part, moving them or recreating them in illustrator is easy. Think of it as a colour sketch book.
