Last year, onedotzero approached Joanie Lemercier of AntiVJ to be part of one of their event, a festival they organised at empac, upstate New York, with a selection of screenings, installations and live performances. The installation, now on show at the China Millennium Monument Museum of Digital Arts onedotzero event, has received fantastic feedback and high acclaim. Just as the team published video describing the project (above), we asked Joanie few questions about the installation.

Joanie: The original plan was to fly to empac to do a 3 weeks residency, to develop a new project from scratch, which would involve projection mapping onto objects, a sound track by minimal techno producer Sleeparchive, and potentially a live performance on the day of the opening. As the video explains, the original idea and schedule felt apart when the volcano erupted, and the 3 weeks long residency turned into just 5 days on site, to setup the installation and prepare a live performance…

We are happy to announce that after months of hard work, and even more to come, Resonate Festival has launched it’s full site and tickets are now available for purchase.

‘Resonate’ is an initiative by “Magnetic Field B” in collaboration with CreativeApplications.Net and Dom Omladine in Belgrade. It’s core aim is to set a new standard in the arts industry by creating a new event platform for inspiration, networking, information, knowledge sharing and education. It brings together distinguished, world class artists, with an opportunity of participating in a forward-looking debate on the position of technology in art and culture. But Resonate is also much more than just a festival, expert seminar or exhibition of visual arts. It is a project broad enough to encompass areas ranging from software engineering to visual arts theory, but also to create a bridge between culturally separated segments of the artistic and intellectual scene through a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach.

Last Saturday, Nokia and Wieden & Kennedy launched alphalabs.cc at the onedotzero_adventures in motion festival at London’s BFI. Shane Walter, the co-founder of onedotzero welcomed the selected audience of artists and developers. First up was Keith Varty, the head of EDX UK Eire Nokia who described the recent efforts by Nokia to promote and get Nokia Lumia 800 into as many hands as possible. Will Coleman from Microsoft UK introduced the device and discussed technical opportunities that the combination of the Nokia Lumia 800 handset and the WP7 platform has created. Will discussed public signage inspiration for Microsoft’s OS, the idea of being able to “glance and see what you need to see and move on”, and “phone serving you rather than the opposite”. They also discussed the visual design of Windows Mobile around ‘Metro’ design framework with content and typography front and centre.

Lost in Lace is the name of new exhibition at the Gas Hall, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. It is a collection of “New approaches by UK and international artists” featuring 20 names including Nils Völker, Reiko Sudo, Chiharu Shiota, Suzumi Noda, Atelier Manferdini, Naomi Kobayashi, Diana Harrison, Michael Brennand-Wood, Annie Bascoul and many more.

Step into a world of lace like you’ve never seen before. See how the patterns, materials and cultural traditions of lace are represented through radical new approaches by UK and international artists. Featuring large-scale, theatrical and visually spectacular work, this exhibition challenges perceptions of what lace can be, involving the visitor in an environment where spaces become fluid and thread creates entirely new boundaries. Many of the international artists are showing in the UK for the first time and artworks will be breaking out beyond the bounds of the gallery, into public spaces.

As a part of the exhibition, and produced by Nexus Interactive Arts, Sembler have created a free iPhone application that allows you not only convert photos into lace but also interact with pieces at the exhibition. Included as a bonus features, which only unlocks when your GPS coordinates are matched to location, allows you to “explore the digital space these sculptures inhabit via your phone and body movements” – video below.

As a recurrent international digital festival, KIKK explores the economical and artistic implications of new technologies, considering that appropriating or anticipating the changes allows transforming them into opportunities.
There is no expert who can deny the deep mutations going on in our society over the last decades. Our world is changing, quickly and on global scale. Every day new processes, new concepts and new techniques are born. Our beacons are washed away and this is continually speeding up more and more. The trend nowadays consists of no-trend: always moving on change. We must adapt to this, anticipate, continually. The economic atmosphere is no exception to this: the companies who survive are those who manage to integrate these new principles and create opportunities of them. The KIKK was born within this context. It is profiled as a panel of the best offerings in the field of economical and artistic innovations. It aims at planting the seed of creativity in the core business of companies and in the heart of the public, in order to guide them into our new, heterogeneous, digital world.

KIKK takes place from Thursday November 24th 2011 /10h00 until Friday November 25th 2011/ 18h00, in the Palais des Congrès of Namur, Belgium.

Entry is FREE and you can book your tickets here. See you there!

Since it’s launch in 2008, CreativeApplications.Net has become a prime source for latest in new creative software and platforms. It continues to play an integral part in the debate about digital art and software. Inspiring thousands of visitors daily, CAN has become an institution for creative app app development. Together with a number of high profile writers, we continue to influence both online media and printed press on the direction of new media and digital arts.

We are 3 years old tomorrow and to celebrate we are running a fundraiser. CAN takes 300+ hours a month to curate & edit, between the blog, Twitter and Facebook. Please help!

We kindly ask you that if you find any joy & value in CAN, please consider a modest donation by clicking on the PayPal button below..

All your donations go to CAN, for development and to continue to bring you great content.

From October 21-23, the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University will conduct the third episode in its conference series, “ART && CODE”, dedicated to the promotion of computational thinking in and through the arts. This time, our theme is “DIY 3D Sensing and Visualization” in plastic and performance media — “Kinect hacking”.

Organized by Golan Levin (@golan), this is the first “kinect-hacking” conference. It celebrates arts-oriented and tinkering-based approaches to interaction research. Also interesting to note that scholarships for women are available, described on the event main page. Speakers include some stars well known to CAN readers, such as Zachary Lieberman (oF), Kyle McDonald, Elliot Woods, Joel Gethin Lewis (ex-UVA) with also a diverse array of workshops utilising popular programming toolkits (P5, oF, Ard, MM/J ,Pd, etc.). Erkki Huhtamo, media arts historian (“media archaeologist”), will provide some historical perspective.
