First created as an interactive installation made in Processing ‘Organized Complexity’ , Unidades by Luis Carli is currently making it’s way to the AppStore.

Interact with hundreds of units that change their color depending on the behavior of the particles close to them. Interfere and watch them reorganize, forming new and unexpected graphic patterns, which are an indirect consequence of the manipulation of the system.

In this project I sought to generate images that were not the direct result from the intentions of an author, from the determinations imposed by a subject, result of applying formulas that are a simplified way to understand our phenomenal world. Created by We Choose Fun, We Sliders is a simple puzzle game where the task is to arrange sliders into a vertical line. The game starts with only few rows and as you progress the number of rows increases. Each row is connected to a different row, ie dragging one to the left with make other move right. This does not work vice versa, meaning that sliders are not inter-connected. Your task is to find the perfect combination resulting in a continuos vertical alignment. This is all made extra wonderful by the colour of the sliders and the background which changes as you move the sliders. Absolutely lovely.

This is an unconventional game with an unconventional interface.
Learning how to use it is part of the game, that’s what you need to know.

Created by James Alliban and inspired by Cubist work, Fracture is an iPhone application that allows you to paint cubist style portraits using your own photographs. As in cubist art, the photos are analysed according to their colour composition, then broken up and re-assembled to new triangle based composition not loosing the sight of the original subject. In Fracture, you can choose up to six different photographs from your library of camera, preferably from different angles and create new photo assemblages. Various options are included such as the ability to adjust outline and shape alpha, blur the content of triangle, average the colour and other. By “drawing” on the screen you endlessly overlay your photographs with segments of the six photos generating unique and very successful cubist like composition.

Created by Kim Asendorf and published by CreativeApplications.Net, asdfbmp is a pixel pattern generator app for iPhone and iPod Touch. It creates a pixel structure by using a spatial partition algorithm resulting in fields populated by pixel patterns.

You can choose from 16 bitmap patterns and 32 colours. You can adjust the minimal field size, the probability of a new division and the proportion between horizontal and vertical division.

In the draw mode you decide which field is going to be divided. By tapping on the screen the field you have chosen gets split under condition that your minimal field size is met.  The auto mode divides until there is no more field left and it’s wonderful to watch. Additionally there is a mode menu where you can choose extra blending modes such as pattern, fill, outline, empty, random.

Kim Asendorf is an artist based in Kassel, Germany. Inspired by social behavior, the thinking of large media groups and the resulting gaps in these systems. Driven by curiosity and the basic idea of a do-gooder, he uses all the known techniques and methods to express oneself.

Latest is the series of sound apps from Henry Chu is SoundGyro, a sound toy that uses iPhone 4′s gyroscope to alter pitch, octave or change the key. The app is still in development and Henry is still working on developing some advanced features. We asked Henry about SoundGyro, here is some info + inspiration behind the app.

Once iPhone4 was released, I wanted to try on the gyroscope as it gives more accurate position/orientation information than the accelerometer. I had the idea to create a theremin like instrument that translate the hand position to musical notes, I did it on iPhone and Wiimote before, but the result didnt impress me, mostly because I cannot combine 2 axis of movement together, the reading will go very unstable. Another reason is that the sensor is not sensitive enough to capture small gesture, which is a big hurdle in creating expressive music, if I can only play long notes slowly.

Using gyroscope I can combine 3 axis of movement together without messing up all of them. Moreover, the device can now detect the rotation rate, it adds another dimension of control. The iPad and 3Gs has a digital compass which behave in a similar way, but the sensor just got better in iPhone4.

Using SoundGyro is simple, tap anywhere on the screen to start the sound, at this moment, there is no difference at where you tap, but I might add some more control for advance playing. Tilting the device upward and download to change the pitch. To move to the upper or lower octave, rotate the device, you can use up to +/- 3 octave. The rolling controls the volume.

The default sound is A, in the setup page you can change the key. You can switch on/off the note snapping also that allow you to play discreet notes or slide between notes.

Wonderfully, SoundGyro as you see in the video below was only one days(!) work. Henry is keen to do more so keep an eye on his vimeo account for new videos + demos.

In the meantime, Sound Yeah bounced from the AppStore approval process for using a private API which Henry forgot to remove. Nevertheless, it is back in the approval queue and (hopefully) should be available in the next few days.

Numen iPhone apps are based on the web art project nudemessenger.com by Francis aka dbdbking created back in 2003. We wrote about it back in April, Neven Mrgan’s + Matt Comi‘s Curious Incident is now available in the AppStore! A fast-paced, retro-style action game with run, dodge and jump your way to safety as an angry rain of just about everything in the world falls and builds a mountain of platforms for you to climb up, up… up to the source of it all: the cause of The Incident.

Created by Rob Seward, Kunst Bauen is an interactive artwork inspired by 80s video games and the Bauhaus. It lets you conjure pulsating, futuristic patterns with just your fingertips. You can stroke the screen to create smooth, swirling shapes, or tap it to make geometric patterns. Kunst Bauen was originally part of a 2008 art installation in Hamburg, Germany. Now it’s available for the iPad and iPhone. The iPad edition features a higher resolution and increased framerate.
