Fluid Vase is an object designed by simulating fluid action. The aim was to translate actions commonly associated with an object into the object itself, which in this case is the action of pouring water into a vase. A high speed camera was used to capture actual water motion in vases of different shapes at 500 frames per second. Simulations in Processing were then based on these footages to produce a 3D virtual mesh.

In this vision, consumers would have various options such as the speed and volume of water, and be able to select a frame from the simulation. Production is then done on demand using 3D printing.

Created by Andrew Kupresanin, Nadia is a camera that has no display of the photographs to be taken, but rather gives the judgment of aesthetic quality to the machine, displaying only a current rating as feedback about when and what to snap.

Within pop culture and society artificial intelligence has been a topic that is approached with hope, fear, cynicism, curiousity and caution. However many intelligent devices have already been effortlessly absorbed into our culture and everyday lives. Currently under development, we will soon see devices and systems that have the ability to think creativly and infer beauty. As this novel technology improves and works its way into consumer devices, what effect will it have on individual preference and our creative process?

The prototype shown here comprises a PyS60 script running on a Nokia N73, a Java App running on a Mac and the online ‘aesthetic quality inference engine’ ACQUINE . The PyS60 script takes a photo which is sent via Bluetooth to the Java App, and from there uploaded to ACQUINE. The returned rating is then sent back to the camera N37 and displayed. (Thanks Andrew!)

Also part of the project is a projection test for the upcoming data sculpture about earthquakes. The hills show the amount of earthquakes over the last three years all over the world. The real world version was modelled by hand using a silicon like material called FormaForm. Each frame in the video is a photograph, a stop motion data sculpture film.

Created by Hiroshi Matoba, Overbug is a music-performance tool designed to compose Minimal and Dance Music. Through looping and newly arranging sound patterns, the program creates complex, polyrhythmic sounds.

In Overbug is the sound arrangement of the repeating music loops equal to the visual abstraction of circular actions which built the interface through circles.

You can download the application for Windows XP, Vista or Mac OS X with Java installed. Windows is preferred. Unfortunately, it does not run on Snow Leopard as it requires a 64bit version of jsyn Java plugin which is not available. I have tried the new Pure Java JSyn Beta but it appears that applets need to be specifically designed to use it. Maybe our Windows readers will have more luck.

Formerly known as MousePath, IOGraphica was created by Moscow designer Anatoly Zenkov to brighten up the routine work. Posting it at Flickr caused informal interest and afterward Anatoly Zenkov and his colleague Andrey Shipilov decided to evolve the app.

IOGraphica is an application that tracks your mouse movements and converts them into a single image showing all the paths you have made with your mouse. The idea is that you just run it and do your usual day stuff at the computer. Go back to IOGraph after a while and grab a nice picture of what you’ve done. Besides the mouse path, the application also tracks your idle time, displaying it as circles of varying radius depending of how much time you spent away from the computer. You can either use blank canvas or tell application to capture your current desktop as an underlay.

Described as the world’s first global live iPhone jam…Daisyphone lets you co-create short loops of music with your friends, over the net in real-time. Created by Nick Bryan-Kinns, Lead of the Interactional Sound and Music Group at the Centre for Digital Music, the app adopts ephemeral type loop interface where you pick and choose notes (four kinds of sound) located in the centre of the circle. Press the i button and then turn sharing on – there are ten loops that are shared across the world. You can create loops with friends or people you’ve never met. Each person has a different colour, and you can write messages around the edge. Once you’ve finished your shared masterpiece you can save it to your iPhone by pressing on the central dot and dragging your loops around.

Daisyphone started out as a web based Java app. You can still run it from the following links: Java single user or Java multi-user (with iPhones too!). Please note that it does take some time to download and start up.

Dasiyphone is an ongoing research project funded in part by the EPSRC and focussing on the nature of mutual engagement in creative experiences. Read more about the design and research behind Daisyphone or the New Scientist article about it.

Also available as a Lite version, there is no reason why not to try out Daisyphone today. The full version will cost you $2.99.

The whole construction was built in under 24 hours and is mostly made of hot glue and wood. A wonderful mix of digital and physical.
