(A Generative Art Lost Chapter)

Through the process of writing Generative Art there were various tangents and miscellaneous-mad-shit that, usually in the name of brevity and clarity, ended up on the cutting room floor. What follows is one such tangent reworked into a brief tutorial. In the week that the Processing 2.0 Beta gets its release this would seem an appropriate time to share this on CAN, as it mentions one of P5-2′s coolest features: publishing to HTML5.

The tutorial is in three sections:

1. “… A Practical Guide Using HTML5″

To me, the why is always as important as the how. So first allow me to explain why this is relevant, even though it didn’t make the book.

2. Processing to JavaScript – The Ridiculously Easy Way

HTML Canvas for Processing Users. The two minute version.

3. Generative Art in JavaScript – The Harder, But Still Ridiculously Easy, Way

Cutting out the middle man. How you might get started with nothing but a JavaScript enabled browser to hand.

Created by Kris Temmerman, aka Neuro Productions, WebGL Tadpoles is an experiment with 30 tadpoles relying on inverse kinematic chains and moving in a 3D using Perlin Noise vector field.

Kris writes: And since they aren’t static objects, I have to project the vertices and calculate the normals every frame in JavaScript. In that sense, the JavaScript speed is reasonable. But as always, I was hoping for more. In C++ I can easily render +500 tadpoles with 4 times as many triangles per tadpole …..To get some anti-alias, I render it first in a frame buffer object 9 times the window size (width*3, height*3). So, no complaints about the WebGL speed… for now…

fbFacesis a project by Joern Roeder and Jonathan Pirnay that deals with the issue of data accessibility on the Internet. The project is a facebook crawler, built using JavaScript & PHP, that starts at the public profile of any fb-user, saving profile image, facebook-ID and name, and afterwards continuing its way to the public profiles of the user’s friends and so on. 100.000 of these profile images were used (via Processing) to print a wallpaper for an entire room.

fbFaces is an attempt to visualize the incredible amount of data and images that we are daily overwhelmed by, so that we can neither realize our own selectivity nor consider the amount of data perceived. The wallpaper transforms the room itself into a flood of information. It surrounds us, cannot be estimated from distance; details can only be caught through determined selection.…..What is normal, what is exaggerated? How are we dealing with that flood of information and in which way is it changing us? How important is image cultivation on the Internet and how important becomes my “facebook-me”?

Confetti is the latest Javascript feature on CAN, created by Patrik Svensson. If you click on the button at the top right corner the script will be activated.

Patrick explains: There are two types of confetti, the traditional pieces of ‘paper’ and a ribbon type that wiggles its way down the screen. The ribbon confetti uses a physics simulation for the motion while the paper confetti is animated using sine functions.

Many thanks to Patrik for his submission.

Created by Jürg Lehni & Jonathan Puckey, Paper.js is an open source vector graphics scripting framework that runs on top of the HTML5 Canvas. It offers a clean Scene Graph / Document Object Model and a lot of powerful functionality to create and work with vector graphics and bezier curves

Paper.js is based on and largely compatible with Scriptographer, a scripting environment for Adobe Illustrator, originally developed by Jürg and Jonathan and with more than 10 years of development.

Feature overview :
- A Scene Graph / Document Object Model for vector graphics: Work with nested layers, groups, paths, compound paths, rasters, symbols etc.
- The handling and drawing of these graphic items is automatic and optimised, allowing you to construct or modify your items and styles and leave the drawing commands to Paper.js.
- A well designed and battle hardened Programming Interface.
- There is a good reason for the word Vector in Vector Graphics. Paper.js offers best of breed Vector Mathematics through its core types such as Point, Sizeand Rectangle.
- PaperScript, a simple extension of JavaScript allows the scoped execution of scripts without polluting the global scope, the execution of multiple scripts per page in their separate sand-boxed scopes while sharing the library code, and the manipulation of Point and Size objects using direct math operations as if they were plain numbers.
- Simple, yet elaborate mouse and keyboard interaction.
- Construct paths and manipulate their curves and segments in very convenient ways.
- Inspect and manipulate the precise bounding box of any item, supporting complicated stroke styles with square ends and miter limits.
- Smoothen curves, simplify path segments by fitting curves through points.
- Simulate dashed strokes which are currently lacking from the Canvas object, at near native drawing speed.

glitch.js is a javascript by undef collective that takes the content on your site and creates glitch type effect. Install is really simple, download the library, wrap in <div id=”glitchContent”> what you want to use as source and <onclick=”startGlitch()”> to call the start glitch function anywhere to start the fake glitch. If you want existing div glitched, just change it in the glitch.js with find and replace.

Below are the examples from undef website.
