Out of Berlin, a city known for great design and shitty winter weather, comes Buchstabengewitter (letter storm), a generative typography project that transforms three-dimensional linear structures into all the letters of the alphabet. Developed by designer and programmer Ingo Italic the dynamic type display is only the latest experiment out of Letters Are My Friends, a research laboratory he runs together with Bärbel Bold. A place where, as the laser-cut sign outside says, “type meets new technology”
Last year, onedotzero approached Joanie Lemercier of AntiVJ to be part of one of their event, a festival they organised at empac, upstate New York, with a selection of screenings, installations and live performances. The installation, now on show at the China Millennium Monument Museum of Digital Arts onedotzero event, has received fantastic feedback and high acclaim. Just as the team published video describing the project (above), we asked Joanie few questions about the installation.

Joanie: The original plan was to fly to empac to do a 3 weeks residency, to develop a new project from scratch, which would involve projection mapping onto objects, a sound track by minimal techno producer Sleeparchive, and potentially a live performance on the day of the opening. As the video explains, the original idea and schedule felt apart when the volcano erupted, and the 3 weeks long residency turned into just 5 days on site, to setup the installation and prepare a live performance…

‘Monolith’ is the latest project from the London based design studio Signal | Noise. The team collaborated with the Swiss design studio Unit for the french luxury label Hermés, and their new flagship store in Geneva. The theme for the evening was the meeting of handcraft and technology and in the first room they created an iPad application which invited guests to leave their hand print on the evening, wheres the second installation, shown here, included a six metre interactive object that allowed visitors to control strips of light passing through it.

Created by Rainer Kohlberger and Wilm Thoben (praxis berlin), White Light / White Heat (2011) is a piece for the site specific installation ’shift’ shown at the 22PRESENTS showroom in Prague. A strong laserbeam is deflected by two mirrors oscillating at very high speeds. The human eye perceives a stable image as long as they move fast enough. White Light / White Heat operates at the threshold of this rate. A constant modulation is introduced, flicker and envelopes modulate basic geometric shapes and waveforms.

“Shift”: The skeleton of the space is shifted into a different perspective and outlined on the walls. Focussing on the transformation of one perspective into the other the space between the two is explored through iterative processes. The infinite variations and states of the process are reflected in generative laser drawings. The sound creates a constantly changing environment. Space is made perceivable through moving relatively static sound sources across a special loudspeaker setup. Different sound beams scan the room and explore its spatial properties.

Parhelia by Paul Prudence is a real-time A-V performance piece where sample based mechanical sounds are used orchestrate a family of concentric forms in space. The vvvv scenes suggest the workings of a imaginary machine where its component parts, or ‘gears’ interact with one an another triggering corresponding sounds.

Parhelia uses direct translation of sound to visual material via OSC and MIDI data transmission. Sound design and composition is done in Ableton Live which runs along side VVVV. MIDI & OSC data is sent from Ableton Live’s time-line and processed in VVVV to choreograph the animation in real-time. A midi device is used to control aspects and behaviour of each of the forms during a performance ensuring the each performance is unique. A variety of field recordings, including samples of mechanical devices, form the basis of the sound design.

“Sometimes it seems as if I were looking at myself from the outside. As if the imaginary camera eye moved away from first person view to third person view. I think it is an error in perception. Brain creates reality in itself after all and senses are only reference points for its creation. But I know what a feeling it is. It is as to look at the whole chaos of life from from above and to feel the line around which new events spring up. It is a united line which is the median of everything that happens.”

The interface by Boris Vitázek uses kinect as input via vvvv. The piece represents the first version of software that Boris plans to evolve into a more complex type of performance. Boris also sees it as something that could be a musical instrument which includes a combination of object and body control.

The piece originated from the impulse at kinect workshop in progressbar and it was displayed as an output of this workshop at the festival Multiplace 2011 in Bratislava.
