Multitouch Space Invaders [Environment]

multitouchspaceinvaders

If you have read these posts you know that retro gaming has a special place in our hearts. It is even more so when contemporary interfaces are combined with old skool gaming. Multitouch Space Invaders is one of those projects.

The project explores a new way to interact besides the classical multitouch applications that we’re familiarized to such as the iPhone. The team wanted to change the vision of typical finger based application to another concept that increases the collaboration with other users. Using balls as inputs versus fingers, the players could play in a totally collaborative environment.

There is not much information on the software and hardware behind the project but from what is available it is that the software is some form of ‘actionscipt’ incorporating a video camera/capture that records and feedbacks image changes to the projection. Once the user has covered/affected part of the image with the ball, the capture device knows to remove space invader affected thus a loop is created (my guess).

Multitouch Space Invaders is part of Guten Touch Installation for the redbullmusicacademy.com

The creator, Multitouch Barcelona, is a recently born interaction design group that explores natural communication between people and technology. They design touch sensitive environments where real world interactions move to a digital context. Interfaces where people touch, play, move, feel…Where senses play their natural role, where everything just ‘happens” as it does in the real world.
