NODE10 – Forum for Digital Arts [Events, vvvv]
This is a guest post by Marius Watz, one of the curators of the NODE10 exhibition.
NODE10 – Forum for Digital Arts
Frankfurter Kunstverein, November 15-20, Frankfurt am Main
NODE10 was the second installation of the NODE festival, a project created to support the community of VVVV, the popular tool for realtime video synthesis. VVVV is a visual programming environment, similar to Max/MSP and Pure Data but with a strong bias towards realtime graphics and complex multimedia installations. This week-long event included live events, a theoretical symposium as well as the exhibition “abstrakt Abstrakt – The Systemized World” (to be covered in detail in a follow-up post).
But the core of NODE10 was really its extensive programme of practical workshops, ranging from basic tutorials to advanced topics:
- Digital Media in Performing Arts
- Visual Music
- Projection on the Things
- Effects and Shaders
- Plugin Coding
- Character Animation
- Data Visualization
- Boygrouping & Multiscreen Setups
See the NODE10 Flickr group for more pictures from the festival.
VVVV
Originally created as an in-house development tool for the media design agency MESO, VVVV is now being developed by the independent VVVV group. Among its most notable features: Support for GPU shaders, integration with hardware control interfaces like MIDI, DMX and OSC as well as the unique Boygrouping feature which makes networked rendering effortless.
At NODE10 much attention was given to VVVV’s newest feature, the ability to write plugin nodes directly in C#. This provides a powerful bridge between the ease of patch-based programming and more conventional procedural programming. Simply put: The best of two worlds.
Event: Abstract Birds – Genesi
The performance Genesi by Abstract Birds showed off VVVV’s full potential, featuring shader-heavy graphics and smart audio-responsive animation.

Demo night: Patcher Kutcha
No festival would be complete without a fast-and-loose demo session. NODE10′s version was Patcher Kutcha, hosted by MESO’s Max Wolf.
