Created by 32Bits Criações Digitais with Itaú Cultural and Associação Cultural o Mundo de Lygia Clark, this iPad app recreates Lygia Clark’s “Livro-Obra” (wiki), published in 1983 but through a new interface that reinterprets its manipulable structures, textures and finishings. Most of the elements in the book are interactive, inviting to learn more about Lygia’s intriguing process of cut, fold and twist.
The “Livro-Obra” follows the artist’s trajectory since its first creations to the final neoconcrete phase. It is an elaboration on cut-through, moveable, foldable and twisted planes that depends on a counterpart: the reader and the required interaction with the work. We hope that you, the reader-artist, can trail the same footsteps Lygia trailed by touching, gesturing and interacting with the app, thus revisiting the important discoveries reported on the original work – this time on your own iPad.
The project complements the exhibition which is currently taking place in Brazil trough September 1 to November 11, 2012 in Itau Cultural’s building in São Paulo. The app was developed entirely in CocoaTouch using plain UIKit, with one single exception. The red string spread, which used Cocos2D and it’s integration with Erin Catto’s Box2D. None of the apps imagery was based on photographs, all the paper textures presented in the book we’re digitally recreated based in a meticulous research of the artist’s originals. The interactive 3D models we’re created using 3DMax and pre rendered into a PNG sequence to maximize the quality of it’s presentation.
Lygia Clark was a Brazilian artist best known for her painting and installation work. She was often associated with the Brazilian Constructivist movements of the mid-20th century and the Tropicalia movement.
- Brion Gysin: Dream Machine [iPhone] The New Museum will present “Brion Gysin: Dream Machine,” the first US retrospective of the work of the painter, performer, poet, and writer Brion Gysin (born 1916, Taplow, UK–died 1986, Paris). Along with the exhibition, the museum has launched an iPhone app, inspired by Gysin’s Dreamachine (1961). It is a kinetic light sculpture that utilizes the “flicker” effect to induce visions when experienced with closed eyes. While the application itself maybe deserved a little more love, it's a lot of fun regardless + it's free. Working simultaneously in a variety of mediums, Gysin was an irrepressible inventor, serial collaborator, and subversive spirit whose considerable innovations continue to influence musicians and writers, as well as visual and new media artists today. The exhibition will include over 300 drawings, books, paintings, photo-collages, films, slide projections, and sound works, as well as an original Dreamachine—a kinetic light sculpture that utilizes the flicker effect to induce visions when experienced with closed eyes. “Brion Gysin: Dream Machine” is curated by Laura Hoptman, Kraus Family Senior Curator, and will be on view in the New Museum’s second floor gallery. - Phaidon Design Classics [iPad] Created by Phaidon, 200 years of design classics is now available on the iPad. The application offers access to an encyclopedic, illustrated history of 1,000 timeless designs by not only renowned designers, such as Marcel Breuer, Achille Castiglioni, Le Corbusier, Jasper Morrison, Dieter Rams, Eero Saarinen, and Philippe Starck but also anonymously designed pieces, such as the clothes peg, the corkscrew, and the chopstick, that have stood the test of time. Unfortunately, I am yet to own an iPad, but if there was an app I would purchase first it would be this. Whilst I am somewhat sceptical of "beautifully rendered, 3D environment", having an access to library of this size sounds like a wonderful Sunday eve sofa chill. From cars to chairs, from tableware to cameras, from toys to airplanes, the application features products that are most often still in production today, largely unchanged since their creations..... The objects are organized chronologically, easily accessible via a timeline on the right side of the screen. Material contained in the application includes archival photographs, original sketches, patents, prototypes and informative text with precise information about the product, designer, manufacturer and the object’s historical context. - Flutter [Objects, Inspiration] Flutter is an interactive artwork by Dominic Harris, and produced by Cinimod Studio. Presented at this years Kinetica Art Fair, the installation explores the viewer’s encounter with a rabble of virtual butterflies. Inspired by some ideas from the zoetrope and its later successor, the praxinoscope, by introducing interactive component it attempts to distance itself from the linear nature of the historical devices. As the viewer moves along the piece, the butterflies respond in various manners, directly interacting with the viewer. The object is 4.5m long, consisting of 88 monitors mounted as double-sided video fins protruding from a front surface mirror. I asked Dominic about the technical component of the installation and how it was all achieved. Dominic writes: All hardware and control is bespoke, developed for the Flutter artwork. Each of the 88 screens is individually controlled from a PCB that holds 1 gigabyte of uncompressed full-resolution AVI animation. Each of these is connected in series to a DMX data signal, where the DMX provides the frame number of the animation file to display update at 60 fps. A single solid state computer runs the overall installation, taking the data feed from the two thermal tracking cameras and interpreting their outputs to determine the correct animation frame number for each screen. - Visual Editions [Profile, iPad] Visual Editions, nicknamed VE, is a London-based book publisher, started in early 2009 by Anna and Britt. The idea for VE comes from our joint love of books and a (mischievous) desire to do things differently, so that everything we do translates into a new experience for the readers as well as for all the writers and designers VE work with. We wondered why there is such a large divide between text-driven literary books on the one hand and picture-driven art and design books on the other. And we wondered why this divide seems so extreme, when most of us compute visuals in our everyday more than ever before. We believe this visual everydayness adds to the way we read, it adds to the way we experience what we read and the way we absorb and understand the way stories are told: through words and pictures. The latest book is called Composition No. 1, and it’s the first ever “book in a box”. The book was written in 1961 by Marc Saporta, Universal Everything designed it, introduction is by Tom Uglow of Google and it features diagrams by Salvador Plascencia . The book also comes in an iPad version, first of many yet to come from VE. So, our Composition No. 1 app is not just a copy of the book on screen. Far from it. And it hasn’t got those curly cornered pages (we never got the idea of those, it isn’t a book made of paper so why pretend to be one?). - Rorschach Cards and Balloon [iPad] éditions volumiques continues to innovate in the area of digital books and games for the iPad. Whereas previous projects such as (I) Pawn showed potential, the following two are a wonderful step forward continuing to question the future of books and games for the iOS platform. Inspired by Rorschach inkblot test, Rorschach Cards is a collection of playing cards which cause different inkblot effects once laid on the iPad's screen. As with other éditions volumiques's games, it appears magnets are used at different locations of the card allowing iPad to recognise unique touch patterns for each card. In addition, the graphic on the visible faces of the cards match perfectly with the animations they generate. Balloon on the other hand is a "pop up book" story where last pages include an interactive animation of air balloon which with the help of simulated shadow appears to be floating above the iPad. Once again the magnet is used to locate the balloon and different swipes applied to the screen cause wind direction to change. I am not sure whether is it just the video and they way it was filmed but the air balloon does really appear to be floating above iPad's screen. - Passion Pit: Gossamer – New interactive music app by Scott Snibbe Studio The "Passion Pit: Gossamer" by Scott Snibbe Studio is a new interactive music app for iPhone and iPad that combines voronoi diagram with album imagery to allow you to interact with the band's music video or create new melodies using the samples provided. The project started at the Webby Awards a couple months ago, doing video backdrops to their new single "Take a Walk." (video here) Then the team expanded the collaboration to an app "EP" featuring two songs, including a new track: "Carried Away." Each song can be experienced in two modes - one is an interactive music video, where the sequencing of graphics, animation, and photographs by Mark Borthwick are different every time. The second mode for each song is a "remixer" in which people can create their own music with Passion Pit's raw material. For "Take a Walk" people can create new melodies on top of a backing track, by creating a kind of harp-string spider web. In the remixer for "Carried Away" all the parts of the song can be turned on and off via touch tiles. Some loop, while others are synth notes.
