Golden Tiger – Moving projection on the streets of Paris

Le3, a french design studio, invites you to discover their new production “GOLDEN TIGER”.

If their work combines architecture, live and engineering, they offer us a new vision an reflexion of art and its own interaction with the architecture of the city, thanks to an innovative process : the motion street mapping with no post production FX. Discover an amazing running tiger during the night, which blends into the lights of the streets of Paris on the video below.

This project is unfortunately 100% a rip off of Karolia Sobeka’s “Wildlife” piece from 2006. http://www.gravitytrap.com/artwork/wildlife

Wow I wonder if this is related to the tiger projection running through the streets of Brasil, from 2007 (where the animation also matches the speed of the car)

Thanks. I’ve added a reference to Karolia’s project in text.

Wow. 100% rip off is no exaggeration.  The end says “from an original idea / Mehmet Aydogdu, Julien Nonnon, Romain Vollet”.

  • laurent pastorelli

    copy pasted indeed.

  • Surfoid

Could you invite the guys to a short Q&A about this project? It would be interesting to hear their side of the story, before they are slammed for copying another project.

and now they’ve disabled comments on the video.  Iterating on ideas that inspire you is fine, but calling something your original idea and then actively hiding it when you are called out is pretty low.  There is so much unexplored territory in this world, why would you would spend your time re-doing something someone else has done without learning anything new from it?

and now they’ve disabled comments on the video.  Iterating on ideas that inspire is one thing, but recreating something and then actively hiding it when you are called out is pretty low. There is so much unexplored territory in this world, why remake something that’s been done? No one learns anything that way…

I think there’s room for more than one tiger projection… I definitely prefer this version.

  • Surfoid

No one is complaining the use of the “projection-from-driving-car-technique”. That’s just a mechanic and open for anyone to use (even if you should credit the originator for it). What’s kinda disappointing, is the fact, that they didn’t try to expand on the original idea, but just ran with it and are promoting it as their own. Granted, their tigers animation may run a bit more smoothly. Then again, Karolinas projection is more varied, adapting its animation cycles to the vehicle speed.
Again, there’s no shame in finding inspiration or even heavily referencing other works. As long as you give credit where it is due and don’t try to sell an achievement as yours when it’s clearly not.

reminds me of another case of an advertising agency ripping off an artist (Chris O’Shea in that case) … gosh creatives in the advertising industry wake up !

  • Gutierrez

the need for someone to stand out in this network, copy pasting and filming with an hd camera changes everything.

  • Gutierrez

really sad , they dont even have the interaction where the car stops moving the tiger does as well, what a piece of shit, cant really stand these people that steal works so blatanly and cinically, original idea my ass.

I like to give them benefit of the doubt, believing that more than one person can actually arrive to the same idea – also know as synchronicity - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronicity

  • jr

ya this copy is not ever better…  Karolia Sobeka’s tiger slows down and even stops to look at you when the car stops… this remake is just a simple loop,  if your going to steal at least make it better!

  • Surfoid

It’s an interesting situation, for sure. And I’m relatively sure, that we’re not dealing with the typical acency-ripping-off-artist-situation. It’s just a little surprising, that they block off any discussion about this topic, by disabling comments on their video. So how about inviting the guys and Karolina to a little questionnaire? No accusations, just let them tell us about their thought process. I’d think this could make for an interesting CAN post.

While I too cried riiiiip to Karolinas version when first seeing it- however I can appreciate the fact they actually have their tiger touching the ground -something that always bothered me in her version. Nevertheless, the fact that her animation reacts to the speed of the car and came out roughly 5 years ago(?) trumps it by far. I can imagine they simply didn’t know of the original project [which I learned via we-make-money-not-art, but having forgotten that, had a hard time finding/googling the video the day this story launched]. ‘drive-by projection’ turns up surprisingly few results… I too would like to hear their side of the story.

  • Nrlnd

This ripoff is not ok .. maybe you should change the article to “people taking credits of others work and ideas”

I really hope people read the comments and not get stunned by the “amazing idea” from l3paris.

just wanted to point out these other projects: http://www.youtube.com/user/WWFDeutschland#p/c/1/iKrGigVqp58, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o843l7mC3M.  there’s clearly enough pressure and capital to rip off art works for promotional purposes.  this project though seems to be done for self promotion?  if we (artists, designers, developers) can’t be fair to each other, we open a lot more room for abuse from advertisers. and disabling comments on their video is not a very honorable way to deal with this

  • http://www.facebook.com/jefftimesten Jeffrey Crouse

Except that they disabled comments on their Vimeo video as soon as people began linking to Karolina’s project.  Even if they did honestly arrive at the same idea, refusing to discuss it is a slimy thing to do.

With no knowledge of either of these pieces, I did a music video for the band Les Savy Fav that was quite similar in 2010. https://vimeo.com/16303925
