Bloom [iPhone]

Brian Eno and software designer Peter Chilvers come together to bring you Bloom.

Bloom explores uncharted territory in the realm of applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. Part instrument, part composition and part artwork, Bloom’s innovative controls allow anyone to create elaborate patterns and unique melodies by simply tapping the screen.

Although entertaining in the beginning, we do wonder whether this is just an attempt to scoop some of the great revenues shared by many iPhone developers in the AppStore. Whilst we do think the app is very interesting, it does tend to be a little repetitive and the entertainment factor is short lived. A total lack of any save, export controls, unfortunately, results in Bloom being just a toy. Nevertheless, we have enjoyed playing with it and letting it go on in the background is very relaxing. Bloom brings back memories of once loved lava-lamps which were fascinating at first but very quickly turned into insignificant objects collecting dust.

If you are a fan of Brian Eno, ie. the type who purchases t-shirts, caps, and other gear at live concerts, than this is for you. If you are musician, and a little more serious about what you do, then this is no more than a screensaver, you can’t do much with.

We are sure we’ll see many more applications like this which in some ways is not a bad thing (Artists’ self-promotion and new sources of income). In any case, Bloom needs a pricing rethink, say $0.99 for “instrument, part composition and part artwork” sounds good, or a free giveaway with a new album.
