6942 Goldfish Music Box [iPhone, Sound]

Created by Francis Lam aka db-db-db and inspired by his own art installation that tracks movement of fish and turns them into sound,  Goldfish Music Box is an iPhone application that converts colors into music. The principle is simple; you open up the application, pick colors to represent different music notes and listen to the colorful world as you move your iPhone around your environment. The application shown both the image camera sees as well as the colours that are being mapped – translated into sounds. There are seven variants, ie the complexity levels as well as colour tolerance.

It can turn your goldfishes or any moving objects into an interactive music box. You can also use it as a musical instrument to create tunes with the environment. Listening to shimmering lights and wandering clouds may become your next adventure.

Although slightly pricey ($4.99) it’s quite a unique experience. I would have liked to see ability to import your own samples with slightly more channels but perhaps considering this is the first release we can hope to see this in future versions. Very impressive nevertheless.

db-db-db is also behind the AskNumen iPhone app we wrote about few months back inspired by web art project nudemessenger.com. See also http://db-db.com amongst many other interesting projects on db-db-db
