R133 is a new iPhone app by Tcheupel Garanger, the creator of Cs133 we mentioned few weeks ago. As described in the AppStore, it is a graphical representation of the breathing cycle. What may seem a simple app at first, turns out to be quite an accomplishment, most probably no other app on the iPhone has achieved.
By recording and visually simulating breathing, I have found that a user creates an incredible relationship between the device and natural behaviour. Similarly the way you think about touch controls, when objects react to your fingers moving across the screen, the perception in R133 is quickly changed from a simple recorder to thinking that you are controlling the graphic behavior with breathing. An instant connection is created, one that if you maintain you normal breathing pattern seems indestructible. If you have ever had your blood pressure taken in a hospital or where the machine produces sound of your heart beat (or electrocardiography), you will know the feeling I am talking about. R133 provokes same quandary of behavior where one wonders if the machine is an extension of the body.
Tcheupel is very modest when he describes the app as graphical representation of the human breathing with a hold buttons recording system. R133 goes way beyond this by allowing us to question our natural behavior. I didn’t feel there was any need nor point embeding a movie of the app because the only way you can understand the connection is it to record your own breathing. What is embedded are the beautiful screens of the interface Tcheupel has created.
Astounding, awesome and breathtaking (for sure) are the three words to describe it. A must!

- Pulse+ [iPhone] Pulse+ is an interactive version of the classicÂ video fromÂ Pink TwinsÂ (musicians and video artists, brothers Juha and Vesa VehvilÃ¤inen from Helsinki, Finland) available for the iPhone. Pulse+ is a reconstruction of a natural phenomenon. A satellite photo of a Siberian glacier is transformed through 3D animation and digital manipulation into an ice storm, raging to the rhythm of a regular pulse. The multidimensional work consists of found footage layers and parallel rhythms. The chaos of the nature is harnessed to a rhythm and format that is easier to grasp by a human being. - Tentacle [iPhone, Events] Tentacles is an iPhone/iPod touch application designed for participation in a multi-user, location-based game projected into public spaces. Co-developed by the Canadian Film Centre Media Lab, the OCAD Mobile Lab, and the York University Mobile Media Lab, with support from CONCERT, tentacles can be played indoors or out â€“ projected on walls, in theatres, stadiums, giant outdoor screens, or on the side of a building. Players are immersed in an inky pool of darkness found deep near the ocean floor. Each player controls a Squid-like form evoking primitive sea creatures in search of life sustaining micro-organisms dubbed â€œtenticules.â€ As your creature grows in size, players are subject to the presence of other oceanic avatars. Played in a world for all to see, the shared display reveals what happens as the actions of individuals co-exist in a sea of othersâ€™. - Physical Sequencer aka Thump [oF, Sound, iPhone] As a part of Yamaha/RCA's "Making Fun Serious" exhibition at Chappell of Bond Street (a big old music shop),Â Marek Bereza created this sound sequencer installation which is controlled by reactive nodes spread across a two dimensional mesh. There were 8 steps in the sequence and 7 different sounds. Each cell has a depth sensor with which you can turn the cell on or off. The cells each have a light indicating whether they're active or not and a light indicating the which part of the sequence you're on. The concept belongs to Giuseppe Guerriero and the electronics hardware was done by Stefan Dzisiewski-Smith. The application used for the installation derived from Marek's iPhone application called Thump which has been available in the AppStore for few weeks now. Because Thump was built in openFrameworks, with extra audio IO functionality for iPhone itÂ runs on iPhone, Mac and Windows, Marek built it to be portable, ie be used in different instances and is almost exactly the same code used for the Yamaha/RCA installation as for the iPhone. Simultaneously, as a part of London Digital Week, Marek was also involved during Tent exhibition where created MultiThump, an app for a multitouch table. It ran on a Gesturetek multitouch table. Basically it was the Thump iPhone app, with the synthesis ripped out and replaced by MIDI (which fed a Max patch for sounds). Up to 3 people could use it as there were 3 separate piano rolls (the grid things), controlling drums, bass and synth. On the table there were 2D sliders to control effect parameters. As you approach the table, there's an array of depth sensors wired into an arduino to detect your presence and respond by bringing up a piano roll. This was done freelance for a company called Seeper. Thump for the iPhone is 16 step sequencer application and a pocket groove box. Completely built in openFrameworks it allows you to ceate huge basslines or warped synth sounds with the two polyphonic synthesizers onboard. Modeled on the classics, these synths offer a wide palette of sounds with its subtractive synthesis engine. Choose from 9 studio-quality different drumkits, create your own or share and download more. The sample-accurate sequencing engine ensures your beats are as tight as much as possible. The app also allows you to upload your songs to thump's website so you can share them with your friends. - Zio [iPhone] Interactive generative art application we mentioned few months back from award winning computer animator and software designer Glenn Marshall is now finally available in the AppStore. Explore and interact with an endlessly generating world of organic visuals using drag and pinch to pan, move and rotate through space, pause / play, save snaphots to your photo library, and switch on audio reactive visuals. The app is based on the same algorithm (metamorphosis) as used in Glenn's collaboration with Peter Gabriel to create The Nest That Sailed The Sky music video (see video below). While the app is free to download, included only is the visualizer of set parameters. To get the full 'Zio Studio' upgrade you need to purchase the upgrade via In App Purchase. Once you have done the full download, a whole set of incredible features (options) are available at your disposal. Whilst the app (default) in itself is quite immersive once you have unlocked the full potential you will find yourself spending at least an hour experimenting with all the features. Of course, as you would expect you can save your configurations and the app comes with 3 presets. Share to switch between these and interact with one at the time. Here is a list of modification features available in the Zio Studio upgrade: - Size, shape and growth of branches. - Particle motion and dynamics. - Colours, shading and special effects. - Audio reaction settings for individual graphics. - Alter the underlying math algorithms. - Camera tracking and motion. - Watch Zio react in real time as you make changes. - 10 user preset slots to save your creations. - Full visual instruction and help guide built in. The app is so comprehensive is what it allows you to change is that you begin to wonder what is not included. This is not just for the sake of adjusting parameters but also the overall concept behind the app. I wonder whether the case of app's self awareness was ever considered by Glenn. The biggest fall for many generative apps is that you tend to explore the options at first few opens but soon after find yourself removing the app from your iPhone as you believe you have fully discovered it's functionality. The issue of self-awarness is an interesting one, leading into the are of AI, or intelligent systems/apps. Not many iPhone artists are exploring this area just yet but in a nutshell it is only an additional parameter that has some time/date/event/usage pattern based relation. In other words what may appear to happen one day within the app may be drastically different another day depending also on how ofter you have used it. I suppose this idea of permanently evolving eco-system of generative visuals would somewhat encourage users to keep returning to the app to check its evolution. Nevertheless, Glenn has successfully created an eco-system, one that is highly customisable. Evolutionary or not, the app lets you dive into the deep end of the detailed behaviour patterns Glenn has designed. Probably most impressive feature of all is the audio reactive functionality which you can custom set to most of the parameters. This means that as you speak louder into the mic and depending on what you have set in the options, those elements will respond by changing their scale, colour, position, replication, etc.. Zio (as he points out) is a fusion of science, technology, art, nature, mathematics and very impressive indeed. - iAttractor [iPhone] iAttractor is an iPhone application allowing you to generate dynamic three-dimensional Attractor forms you can navigate and alter. An attractor is a term used to describe a set to which a dynamical system evolves after a long enough time. Points that get close enough to the attractor remain close even if slightly disturbed. Graffiti Analysis is an extensive ongoing study into the motion of graffiti. Custom software designed for graffiti writers creates visualizations of the often unseen motion involved in the creation of a tag. Motion data is recorded, analyzed and archived in a free and open database, 000000book.com, where writers can share analytical representations of their hand styles.
