Star6 is a DJ or perfomance oriented music app that allows you to play loops and control several different effects on said loops. It’s very much geared towards glitchy music since the included effects allow you to slice, chop, stutter, gate, pitch shift, filter, and otherwise destroy your samples. This app gets big points for design – the interface is clean yet stylish, the controls are appropriately sized, and all the important stuff is on one page – which is ideal for live performance. It’s also probably the first app I’ve seen that uses triangular buttons to good effect. Turns out you can fit two of them comfortably in the space that one square button normally would fit. Fancy that! Other great design choices include using the accelerometer ’tilt’ to edit parameter values (as opposed to sliders or knobs). This works out pretty well for performing.
The app includes several banks worth of loops – each setup can hold up to 6 loops. The included loops are recognizable, but quirky and go well with the apps features and overall personality. Thankfully you can also load your own own sounds through your web browser, which opens up lots of possibilities for Star6.
Overall, I recommend this app. It includes a lot of the things I love about the Kaoss Pad and presents it nice easy to use interface. Check it out!
