Description

Data Visualiser
Shoreditch / c£55k

The Open Data Institute will catalyse the evolution of an open data culture to create economic, environmental, and social value. It will unlock supply, generate demand, create and disseminate knowledge to address local and global issues. We will convene world-class experts to collaborate, incubate, nurture and mentor new ideas, and promote innovation. We will enable anyone to learn and engage with open data, and empower our teams to help others through professional coaching and mentoring.

Fundamental to this will be a development team that will not only deliver projects for the ODI but will support our members and the start-ups we are incubating in order to achieve big things with open data.

Projects will range from managing our own infrastructure and developing prototypes to contributing to open source tools.

As well as being able to demonstrate expertise and initiative, members of the development team must be committed to sharing knowledge and ideas and working with technical and non-technical colleagues, members and clients.

We are now looking for a Data Visualiser with a solid background in using source control, testing frameworks and agile development practices to lead and advise on creating compelling data visualisations for use in our print and online materials.

Candidates should have experience in:
creating compelling data visualisations that help users to make good decisions
selecting data visualisation techniques based on the characteristics of underlying data
illustrating certainty and other statistical concepts within visualisations
designing engaging graphics for printed materials
using visualisation tools and libraries such as Gephi, Processing, R and/or d3js
building interactive solutions using standard web technologies: HTML, SVG, CSS and Javascript
creating images, icons and other assets to use within web applications

As well as technical experience and skills, all members of the team will be required to write about and present their work, share their knowledge with the team and other developers, be familiar with the principles of good web application design and preferably linked data, and show initiative in suggesting technical and non-technical solutions to issues we encounter.

If you have experience of a range of environments, are willing to learn about new ones and are intrigued by or already passionate about open data, open standards and open source, then we want to hear from you.

Whether you are looking to work part time or full time, you will work with us in Shoreditch, (sometimes attending weekend events such as hackdays).

To find out more about this unique opportunity to drive, shape and lead projects that can really make a difference then email us your CV to jobs@theodi.org telling us which role you are interested in.
