In the design department, we are responsible for all creative deliverables. This includes everything from email blasts and social apps, to complex multi-platform communities driven by our award-winning editorial. Every week is different and we are constantly growing and adapting to the form that best suits each individual function.

OVERVIEW
VICE needs a solid, mid-weight/senior developer to join its Design and Development team. The role would be ideal for that intelligent-content loving jack-of-all-things dev that has an affinity for and lean towards highly efficient back-end technologies. You will be challenged daily and encouraged to constantly expand your skillset to help feed ideas into and maintain, improve, and build on our already large bevy of connected platforms. Typically, this will involve translating creative into functioning, bulletproof, thought-led websites that can handle anywhere between one and X million visitors per day. Database optimisation, page load-performance, and intelligent, algorithm-based content connected through databases, and process simplification via Intranet\’s should be topics that excite you.

Day to day:
• Creating efficient, flexible, and sustainable systems that can serve data in a number of ways
• Build microsites for VICE and its clients (design skills not necessary, but experience with building UX desirable)
• Build basic CMS\’s for microsites
• Work with Art department on small Flash projects (banners, high impact rich media advertising, etc)
• To undertake such other tasks including general administrative duties as may be required from time to time
• To be an ambassador for the business at all times

Skills:
• Back-end language powerhouse (SQL/DB, AJAX, PHP…anything that talks to the server or lives on the server)
• Experience developing within a team using Git / Unfuddle or similar versioning workflow
• Experience with popular third party API\’s (Twitter, Instagram, FB, Google API knowledge, OAS)
• Heavy Form validation / GET-POST experience
• Sql / DB optimisation expert
• Experience installing, setting up, and using Open Source CMSs (ExpressionEngine, Symphony, TextPattern, or similar)
• Front end dev skills (css, html5, js, etc) – you will primarily be focused on back-end, but you should be able to whip out a site from A-Z comfortably if needed
• Flash proficiency (basic tweening engine/sequencing knowledge, AS2/3 basics, ability to troubleshoot filesize issues)
• Ability to create detailed use-case and system architecture documents
• Strong self-sufficiency
• Strong project management skills, ability to meet deadlines
• Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills

Highly Desirable:
• Experience using cookies and session data to help inform served content
• Experience with command line/Terminal
• Amazon AWS experience
• Knowledge of standard program design patterns
• Wireframing / UX knowledge
• Flash proficiency (basic tweening engine/sequencing knowledge, AS2/3 basics, ability to troubleshoot filesize issues)
• Python/Django experience
• Objective C/Apple SDK experience (or interest)
