CAN 2018 – Highlights and Favourites

As 2018 comes to a close, we take a moment to look back at the outstanding work done this year. From spectacular machines, intricate tools and mesmerising performances and installations to the new mediums for artistic enquiry – so many great new projects have been added to the CAN archive! With your help we selected some favourites.

It’s doing it – Online exhibition of computer generated images that autonomously update

Created as a collaboration between 9 artists, It’s doing it is an online group exhibition of computer generated images that autonomously updates on a daily basis over the course of 45 days. All of the works in the show are instruction-based artworks expressed through computer programs written by the artists. These programs generate new images once daily that can be viewed on the website.

As 2018 comes to a close, we take a moment to look back at the outstanding work done this year. From spectacular machines, intricate tools and mesmerising performances and installations to the new mediums for artistic enquiry – so many great new projects have been added to the CAN archive! With your help we selected some favourites.

Face Trade is an Art Vending Machine created by Matthias Dörfelt that dispenses unique prints of computer generated face drawings. Instead of paying with money, buyers trade a mugshot that is taken on the spot in order to be permanently stored in the Ethereum Blockchain, consequently turning the transaction into a semi-permanent Face Swap.

Created by Matthias Dörfelt, ‘Block Bills’ is a series of 64 banknotes generated from the Bitcoin Blockchain. Each banknote represents one block in the chain and the whole series consist of 64 consecutive blocks starting at block #456476.

Delving into the glorious ambiguity of human communication, “TLDR (Too Long; Didn’t Read)” is a group exhibition at Oakland’s B4BEL4B Gallery that explores text and language.

Created as a collaboration between 9 artists, It’s doing it is an online group exhibition of computer generated images that autonomously updates on a daily basis over the course of 45 days. Weird Second-order Loops is a series of computer-generated animation loops that never repeat. Each of the loops is centred around a playful and simple cyclical idea that is a procedural reinterpretation of a long existing animation cliché, potentiating it ad infinitum.

Robo Faber is an autonomous drawing robot determined to continuously reproduce graphic connectors. It creates drawings generated using a preset system that is based on the the same process as drawings created by hand.

I Follow is an ongoing series of computer generated flip books created by Matthias Dörfelt where the creature, landscape and animation are randomly generated, using Matthias’ hand drawn marks.

Created by Matthias Dörfelt aka mokafolio, Weird Faces Study uses PaperJS library to produce computer generated faces that have a certain aesthetics and are immediately recognisable.
