Windosill by Patrick Smith (Vectorpark.com) is now available for the iPad. An adventure puzzle game filled with peculiar objects, it is your task to resolve abstract but yet logical puzzles to progress from room to room.

Our post from 2009: The world is populated by objects and beings but it is the square that fits right above the door on your right is the object you are after. This may be given to you by the bird or it could be the part of letter “i”. None of this may make sense but you really need to play the game to find out what is all about. I have managed to pass first 3 levels pretty easy, but I am not sure If I can make logic from level 4. Greeted by weird but wonderful five objects on plant stems, each with individual properties, I am trying to make sense of it all. From the weird characters to the little steam engine that is ‘you’, everything in this game looks great.

Since it’s launch in 2008, CreativeApplications.Net has become a prime source for latest in new creative software and platforms. It continues to play an integral part in the debate about digital art and software. Inspiring thousands of visitors daily, CAN has become an institution for creative app app development. Together with a number of high profile writers, we continue to influence both online media and printed press on the direction of new media and digital arts.

We are 3 years old tomorrow and to celebrate we are running a fundraiser. CAN takes 300+ hours a month to curate & edit, between the blog, Twitter and Facebook. Please help!

We kindly ask you that if you find any joy & value in CAN, please consider a modest donation by clicking on the PayPal button below..

All your donations go to CAN, for development and to continue to bring you great content.

Even better, every donation equal to or over $35 will receive CAN logo shirt – new dark grey style with light grey logo. The t-shirts will go to print in November, with estimated delivery before Christmas (all via our partner Allmightys.com). Once you have made the donation we will get in touch with you for desired t-shirt size and your postal details. P&P is included. (New CAN T-Shirt is only available through donations until October 31st).

UPDATE 07/10/2011: Tshirt are available in both Male and Female models.

Developed by NewMediology (Danqing Shi), Last clock is a clock app that uses popular slit scan technique to keep you in factual time, human time and remote time. Just like any other analog clock, the app has three hands: one for seconds, minutes and hours. The hands, however, are made of a slice of live video that gets scanned to the clockface. With different refresh rate for the three hands, the three time circles reflect the rhythms of the space at different temporal resolutions. The app also allows you to stream the last clock camera feed over the internet.

While experiments with iDevice and Android app development are ubiquitous, design publisher dpr-barcelona’s recent efforts with their Architecture in your Hand initiative are undoubtedly worth highlighting. A scheme hatched to rethink the speed and engagement associated with traditional publishing, Architecture in your Hand proposes a line of ‘mobile books’ that is both post-monograph and post-blog. RSS feeds track the activities of embedded writers, sites of interest are geolocated and annotated – these streams of content help expand the paramaters of a ‘static’ design publication and provide contrast and counterpoint to more standard content such as critical essays and photo-documentation of completed projects. dpr-barcelona editors César Reyes Nájera and Ethel Baraona Pohl describe the project as follows: “Considering that the main goal of a book is to store and transmit information added to the potential of networked learning, we have imagined that this concept can be expanded and spread. As being transmitted through a new basis, this information should be structured following a different mobile logic: enhancing immediacy, brevity, and simplicity. When atomizing the contents, we are sharing capsules of knowledge for the user to learn, share and interact with the city.”

Continue reading....
Inspired by the natural phenomena of cloths and liquids, Ricardo Sanchez explores spring mesh dynamics using box2D physics. SpringMesh is an interactive cloth you can twist, pull and deform using multitouch or gravity. Created by Ricardo and published by apps.CAN, SpringMesh is available now in the AppStore for both iPhone and iPad as an universal app ($1.99).

Features:
- Tap and drag to control the deformers (multitouch supported)
- Adjust spring damping, frequency and force radius
- Adjust mesh appearance including fills, wireframe or points
- Adjust mesh density
- Gravity – mesh gets twisted according to device orientation

–

Details

SpringMesh was built using ofxBox2d physics addon for openFrameworks. It consists of a series of particles interconnected by springs, border particles are static allowing the mesh to maintaing its original form, while inner particles repel, attract to user input (multitouch) or fall under gravity. Its colour is a direct representation of the forces applied, the stronger the force the lighter the colour.

Building the mesh

The grid is build by specifying the number of horizontal cells, from it we calculate the number of vertical cells

float gridRatio = gridWidth / gridHeight;
rows = (int)( cols / gridRatio );

The rest fall in place with a couple of for loops, but first we calculate cell dimensions.

float colCellDist = gridWidth / cols;
float rowCellDist = gridHeight / rows;

int idx = 0;
for ( int j = 0; j for ( int i = 0; i 0 ) {

Here we create horizontal connections by using the newly create particle and the previous in the container with index [idx - 1]. Store in a spring container.

}

if ( j > 0 ) {

Vertical connections follows same principle as before but now we take the previous particle from the container with index [idx - cols - 1]. Store in a spring container.

}
idx++;
}
}

–

Rendering wireframe mesh

For the wireframe view we loop through the springs container, getting both sides of the spring, its colour is calculated by the separation distance of both particles

for ( int i = 0; i < springs.size(); i++ ) {

Get one side position springs[i].joint->GetAnchorA()
Get the other side position springs[i].joint->GetAnchorB()

Calculate distance between spring bodies positions to change colours

float dist = bodyAPos.distance( bodyBPos );
float k = (dist / springs[i].getLength());

Here we draw all springs but no the edge ones, remember that edge particles contain no mass

if ( springs[i].joint->GetBodyA()->GetMass() != 0 || springs[i].joint->GetBodyB()->GetMass() != 0 ) {

Change colour

ofSetColor( 255 * (colR * k), 255 * (colG * k), 255 * (colB * k) );

Building UI

The UI is built upon basic UIKit example bundled with openFrameworks. Additional views are created physicsView, meshView and infoView which are the pop-ups you see when clicked on buttons. The app variables such as adjustSpringDamping, adjustSpringFrequency, adjustForceRadius are connected to sliders. Likewise, their values are updated by init() (example: guiViewController.springDampingSlider.value = drag;). One all the dots were connected, adding a random button was easy by simply void testApp::runRandom() which randomises those values. Saving settings was done using ofxXmlSettings where slider values and switches are written to the xml file. When the app opens, the XML is read and values mapped to setup().

Inspired by the IBM tape loop machine, Donut is the latest release from The Strange Agency. This sound sequencer is a strange one, like the old IBM machine, it makes time two-dimensional by first creating a three dimensional loop and two dimensional sound. It does this by first looping a linear track, then multiplying it into stacks and finally taking the loop stack, and wrapping it itself into a loop, just as the original linear recording is looped. Complicated, sure, so here are few sketches Lucas posted on the blog.

Continue reading....
Inspired by the neo-dadaist collages of Robert Rauschenberg, about a year ago James Alliban decided to write software which would allow him to quickly paint using using a webcam. In March this year, when the iPad 2 was released with both a front and back facing camera, James saw this as an opportunity to make a mobile version.

Composite allows you to remix your surroundings to create compositions. Users can paint pictures using live video stream by simply pointing their iPad towards your subject drawing over it. A variety of control over the brush and video stream is offered to allow for a range of different aesthetics. These include brightness, contrast, colour offset, alpha, blur and thickness.
