Limbo presents and delivers live digital drawings by the artist Simon Faithfull. Wandering the world over the last 10 years, Faithfull has made hundreds of digital drawings using a Palm Pilot or iPhone that record his presence in a particular place, at a particular moment, somewhere on the surface of the planet. To date, over 500 observational sketches record what he saw in each of these places, from the streets of east London to the remote landscape of Antarctica and back again.

Limbo gives you access to all of these images, and sends you new drawings the moment that they are made and in addition you can find out how close you are to the latest one made, it’s exact locations. When the new drawing is available you will receive push notification.

Limbo is part of an ongoing series of web-based artworks commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella. The project is supported by Arts Council England, Cuttlefish, and ArtSway, where Simon Faithfull is an Associate artist.

We are more committed than ever to books, paper, and exploring the possibilities and challenges of our physical objects….At the same time, we’re always looking for new ways to communicate with our readers.McSweeneys.net has been an important part of our operation from our very beginning, and this project is the next logical step.

In the multifaceted world of iOS apps for iPhone, iPad and the iPod Touch, artists are beginning to carve a niche in the crowded landscape of Apple’s Appstore. One trend amongst software artists is to repurpose work that was originally written for desktop computers into small, compact versions that run smoothly on these mobile devices. Although some of these artist-designed apps utilize the location-aware and networked capabilities that these devices offer, several artists are revisiting the interactive and non-connected aspects of their art. One such piece is “Yellowtail” by Pittsburgh-based media artist, Golan Levin. Reexaming his project “Yellowtail”, originally released in 1998 as part of his “Audio-Visual Suite” of applications for the desktop computer, Levin has recreated the piece specifically for the iPhone. From his description: “Yellowtail repeats a user’s strokes end-over-end, enabling simultaneous specification of a line’s shape and quality of movement. Each line repeats according to its own period, producing an ever-changing and responsive display of lively, worm-like textures.” The experience of using Yellowtail is a fluid reminder of what made software-based art such an immersive experience back in the day. Also revisiting his old screen-based work from the 1990s was Scottt Snibbe‘s who has released several apps for the store that have even made it to Apple’s top download list. Maybe as Golan has said in the past, it’s about time for Apple to introduce an “Art” category to the store. Current artist apps are automatically put into the “Entertainment” category of the store which is true to some degree, but hardly does most of these apps justice as a designation.

At its core, Yellowtail it is an interactive software system for the gestural creation and performance of real-time abstract animation. Using a playful animated transformation of the user’s gesture, the software produces an ever-changing and responsive display of lively, worm-like textures. More general information about Yellowtail is available here, and a whole heap of really technical and historical context is here.

Yellowtail was originally developed as a skunkwork project at Interval Research Corporation (1998) with support from Michael Naimark, and later at the MIT Media Laboratory (1999-2000) with support from John Maeda’s Aesthetics and Computation Group (ACG). The iOS ports were developed in openFrameworks and were created with the assistance of Max Hawkins, Lee Byron, Jonathan Brodsky, and enabling support from the OF iPhone crew (Memo Akten, Zach Gage, Theo Watson, Zachary Lieberman, and many others).

Yellowtail can be experienced (with source code) in this interactive Java applet.

Created in collaboration with more than 70 media artists and developers from across the world, Written Images is the first of its kind, a ‘programmed book’, continuously regenerated for the digital printing process, offering each reader a unique experience.

The team, including Martin Fuchs and Peter Bichsel first announced their project in February 2010. Since then, more than 70 image generating software programs were submitted. A jury, including myself, singled out the 42 most creative and successful submissions to be included in the book.

Now, with your support the team hopes to produce the first edition of this unique book and also introduce the “Written Images” print-on-demand service. Please support the project by donating as little as $15 giving you in return one-of-a-kind single postcard (select the artist of your choice). $60 will get you one-of-a-kind set of 42 postcards, and with $200 you will receive the one-of-a-kind Written Images book, surely to be a collectors item. In any case, whichever donation you choose, you are above all supporting this fantastic project!

About:

Digital technologies are successful tools in contemporary design. No matter whether the material is processed by handicraft or digitally altered, the artist always creates out of his very own inspiration. He or she develops the rules of aesthetics which will be valid for their work. These rules will be played with and altered until the pre-defined final product comes into being. Within this work process the computer is not so much seen as a medium, but rather as a programmed simulator consisting of various materials and means to allow analogue steps. This is the point at which generative art starts and helps generating products with the help of self-programmed, digital tools. A single impulse leads to a chain reaction of processes which are defined through mathematical relations. Read more..
