It’s been a long wait but we all knew it was coming. Edge from Mobigame is now available for the iPad. It is one of those games that should probably ship installed on iPhone and iPads and personally one of my favorite games ever made for the platform. This is what we wrote back in January 2009:

Edge adopts slightly retro graphics, consistent throughout the interface and gameplay. Beautifully designed menus, icons and the levels make the game truly enjoyable. A nice addition is the tilt controls although it is something we can see using once we have completed all the levels, which definitely adds to the replay value. We were also very pleased to see that should you make an error and fall off the “edge” you continue where you left of rather than restarting the level. This allows you to take more risks which is great and not be too worried if you miss the edge. Perfection, of course, is the key and your movement through the level for your cube to be in harmony with the landscape.

Edge won many awards and in case you haven’t played it yet, there is no longer any excuse. It is universal and available both for the iPhone and iPad.

Star Ship [dev name] is a new iPhone game created by Kato Yuta, currently in development. Asteroid like shooter, you are in control of a ship trying to destroy incoming enemies – in this case spheres. Tapping anywhere on the iPhone’s screen will shoot and move the ship in that direction and the game includes some very interesting swarm dynamics/behaviour when you try to avoid the incoming spheres. The colour of the background changes as you score more points and all of this is wrapped up in a beautiful minimal interface with date and time included at the bottom of the screen (video below).

Castle Bash is a remake of Atari’s 1980 arcade release Warlords, which is probably best known for its release on the Atari 2600 console in 1981. Rated the 25th greatest video game of all time by Game Informer, Warlords allows up to four players to compete in a castle defense bout that’s something of a combination of Breakout and Elimination / Quadrapong.

If you ask me, this looks like great fun. Castle Bash was developed by TouchGrove, who brought us the retro ’70s LED Basketball [App Store]

Faust (German title: Faust – Eine deutsche Volkssage) is a silent film produced in 1926 by UFA, directed by F.W. Murnau, starring Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto, Camilla Horn as Gretchen/Marguerite, Frida Richard as her mother, Wilhelm Dieterle as her brother and Yvette Guilbert as Marthe Schwerdtlein, her aunt. Murnau’s film draws on older traditions of the legendary tale of Faust as well as on Goethe’s classic version. UFA wanted Ludwig Berger to direct Faust, as Murnau was engaged with Variety; Murnau pressured the producer and, backed by Jannings, eventually persuaded Erich Pommer to let him direct the movie (wikipedia).

The movie contains many memorable images and special effects, with careful attention paid to contrasts of light and dark. Particularly striking is the sequence in which the giant, horned and black-winged figure of Mephisto (Jannings) hovers over a town sowing the seeds of plague. Faust was Murnau’s last German movie, and directly afterward he moved to the US under contract to William Fox to direct Sunrise (1927.) when the film premiered in the Ufa-Palast am Zoo of Berlin, Murnau was already shooting in Hollywood.

Faust was the most complex and expensive production undertaken by UFA. Filming took six months and a cost of 2 million marks (only half was recovered at the box office), until it was surpassed by Metropolis the following year. According to film historians Faust seriously impacted studio shooting and special effects techniques. Murnau used two cameras, both filming multiple shots. Many scenes were filmed time and again, the short sequence of the contract being written on parchment in fire took an entire day to film. (wikipedia)

The story involves Mephisto having a bet with an Archangel that he can corrupt a righteous man’s soul and destroy in him what is divine. If he succeeds, the Devil will win dominion over earth.

Something very simple but fun for the fans. Created by Tokyo based forYou,inc ran by Shinya Kaneda, Iconclock is a clock app for your iPhone that takes the old skool Apple OS6/7 spinning clock to show time/date/set alarms + ‘remember the good old days’.

Here are some features:
- Four background colors to choose from and you can also choose your favorite photo from your device to use as a desktop picture.
- Pinch in, pinch out icon to change size of clock.
- Support the device’s landscaping and reverse portrait position.
- Tap and hold the clock icon to move it around.
- Automatically disable screen auto-locking.
- Good Ol’ alarm sound !
- One more thing

Coming… is a simple yet addictive shooter inspired by the old classics such as asteroids and space invaders. The game needs some balancing but considering it is free and the developer is promising a bunch of updates in the next versions there should be plenty to look forward to. I suppose in-app purchases have allowed developers to take the development one step at a time adding (and charging) for additional features over time. This is one of those examples but whether the developer will charge for additional features remains to be seen. Best to think of it for the time being as a first iteration of something that could be great but for now, enjoy (for free) this simple, clean and quite addictive gameplay.

Somewhat inspired by bejeweled, Piyo Blocks in a game by Big Pixel Studios where the task is to swap adjacent Piyo Blocks to match 3 or more of the same kind to capture them.

Adopting wonderful pixel art style graphics with subtle but very effective animations and although quite similar to bejeweled it nevertheless feels like a new experience. In other words if you are fan and love pixel art, it’s the one for you.

Piyo Blocks also comes in a Lite version which will only allow you to play time attack mode. The full version also includes piyo (capture the target number of Piyos to level up) and hyaku (capture 99 or more of any Piyos to level up) modes as well as rank list.
