Originally released as a Flash-based game back in 2007, The Science Museum of London has just released an iPhone version of it’s popular Launchball puzzle game. Whilst the Flash version is still playable online, the iPhone version comes with 6 tutorial levels and 36 real levels, as well as a fully featured level editor with ability to create your own levels and download the others’ creations. Using over 20 active blocks (including fans, magnets and Tesla Coils) guide your ball through a series of fiendish challenges, and learn some science on the way.

Blockprojekt is a daily blog launched back in 2006 by Kurt Block and Stefan Bergi. All you will ever find there is about cubes. Whether these be images, movies, illustrations, Blockproject is about cubes and cubes only.

Included on the blog is the link to Block Generator. Created using Flash, BG allows you to create many permutations of cubes. Shaded, wireframe, isometric or perspective projection, you can explore thousands of different ways cubes can be illustrated. The project was created back in 2005 and somewhat an inspiration for the blog that still runs today.

Created by Simon Strandgaard, Graphic Designer Toolbox is an alternative graphics editor. Instead of manipulating graphics directly as you do in Photoshop, in GDT you build blocks for bitmap and vector manipulation. Not too dissimilar from Quarz Composer, GDT allows you to create generative artworks using visual object based programming. It’s all created realtime, non destructive and easy to learn.

You start out with an empty grid, insert a Photo building block, combine with many other effector blocks and adjust the parameter. The great thing is that you can create assets. In other words, you have made this cool web button out of a few building blocks but at some point you need a variation of this button. All you have to do is to copy it and adjust a few parameters. Within seconds you have your new button.

Whilst i haven’t yet had a chance to play with the app properly, it does nevertheless sound like a great way to remove yourself from the traditions of thinking about image graphically and more about construction. If the process is as important for you as the final outcome, you should definitely give Graphic Designer Toolbox a go. A demo version is available and the full version will cost you $42.94 (€29.95).

Since the release of Color Expert for the iPhone in the early days of the AppStore, we have seen quite a large number of color creation apps come to the AppStore. Whether this be Adobe’s Kuler service or Color Lovers, one thing is for sure, designers love creating colour palettes.

Color Stream is a new iPhone application that adopts beautiful matt iphonesque interface delivering plenty of features at the right price. Color Stream lets you create and store color palettes, that are either created from scratch, or generated from a photo, or even auto-generated using our built-in color schemer (which supports analogous, monochromatic, triadic, and more). You can save save these, name them, and rate them for quick and easy access. Save any one of your palettes to your photo library (and have the option to make it your wallpaper), email it to whoever, as well as browse flickr for appropriate color-related pictures.

Where Color Expert provides a large number of features many may never use, Color Stream is based around palettes and recording colour ideas you have or are inspired by in the world. I found it very easy to experiment with, try out different combinations and not feel like I have with Color Expert that pressing the wrong button would suddenly change everything. Even if you have never used a color palette app, Color Stream is absolutely wonderful and a great start. Priced $2.99 compared to Color Expert ($9.99) should make the decision of purchasing a lot easier. Of course, if you feel that you are missing Pantone refs and some of the functionality Color Expert provides, you can always upgrade later.

I am personally very impressed and highly recommend it to every colour lover who hasn’t already purchased Color Expert. If you have, you may nevertheless appreciate the lesser features and clarity Color Stream provides.

Although entertaining in the beginning, we do wonder whether this is just an attempt to scoop some of the great revenues shared by many iPhone developers in the AppStore. Whilst we do think the app is very interesting, it does tend to be a little repetitive and the entertainment factor is short lived. A total lack of any save, export controls, unfortunately, results in Bloom being just a toy. Nevertheless, we have enjoyed playing with it and letting it go on in the background is very relaxing.
