ARTSAT1: INVADER – Satellites for artistic exploration

On February 28, 2014, the world’s first art satellite, ARTSAT1: INVADER was launched as a piggyback payload of the H-IIA F23 launch vehicle. INVADER, a 10 cm cube 1U-CubeSat with a mass of 1.85 kg continued its steady operation on orbit, successfully completed an array of artistic missions before reentering the Earth’s atmosphere for disintegration on September 2.

Deep Lab, Deep Dive – Book Sprint at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry

This past December a dozen artists, activists, and researchers converged at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry for a book sprint. Led by Addie Wagenknecht, the all-women cadre convened under the collective moniker Deep Lab, and examined how privacy, security, surveillance, and large-scale data aggregation are problematized in the arts, culture and society.

Superposition—5.84 Quintillion Facets of the Digital Sublime

This past Saturday Ryoji Ikeda presented the North American premiere of superposition to a crowd of several hundred at the Musée d’art Contemporain de Montréal (MAC). As would be expected, the sixty-five minute multiscreen performance played out as kind of a data aesthetics megamix that flashed through a series of precisely choreographed abstract visual vignettes that grappled with the digital sublime and pondered the agnosticism of network culture.
