Sol – An apparatus that depicts pathways of the sun

Sol is a custom made apparatus that can depict any position and any trajectory of the sun. Since the sun’s path changes every day, the exact path it takes through the sky depends not only on the date but also on the geographical location of the observer. Conditional_Lover – A physical bot that automates your Tinder

Conditional_Lover is a bot that unlike its counterparts that live hidden in servers, has a physical appearance with a task to automate your Tinder using its “eyes” and “fingers”. It does this by analysing photos on your phone (webcam) and then selects or rejects it (prongs) based on an algorithm that combines your preferred age, golden ratio, smile, glasses, ethnicity etc.

Vanitas Machine – The transience and extension of life

Created by Verena Friedrich, Vanitas Machine explores the desire for eternal life and the potential of life-prolonging measures. Vanitas Machine is comprised of a candle placed in the centre of glass which protects it from environmental factors and controls it’s lifespan by regulating the oxygen supply.

The Portable Black Cat Radar is part of an ongoing series exploring Machines Responding to Superstitions. The device is comprised of a GPS, gyroscope and magnetometer to gauge your position in the world while at the same time generating fictional black cats for you to dodge.

‘Equilibrium Morphologies’ investigates how complex articulated membrane structures can be erected and tensioned through emergent behaviours of interacting forces and explore multiple states of equilibrium.

Created by Benedikt Groß, Maik Groß and Thibault Durand, Mind the “Uuh” is an experimental training device helping everyone to become a better public speaker. The device is constantly listening to the sound of your voice, aiming to make you aware of “uuh” fill words.

Created by Jonghong Park, ‘Catastrophic Combinations’ explores a recursive system of mechanical repetition where every movement is open to unpredictability and fault.

Since the sun’s path changes every day, the exact path it takes through the sky depends not only on the date but also on the geographical location of the observer. Sol reveals the different pathways the sun takes from anywhere in the world.

‘A Natural History of Networks / SoftMachine’ is an electrochemical algorithmic performance that probes an alternative computational and technological material regime.

Created by Aurélien Pellegrini at ECAL , ‘Pump and Surf’ encourages internet users to find out how much energy is spent when they are surfing the internet. The user is asked to make a physical effort equal to the energy required to convey the data that will enable the site to be displayed.

Created by André Andrade at ECAL (Media and Interaction Design Unit), 300000 km/s is a data visualisation project to highlight the consequential delay in communication in the probable future (interplanatory) expansion of the territory of Man.

Created by Ralph Kistler, ‘Internet of Shrimps’ examines in an ironic and playful way the industries´ promises for an enhanced experience in a completely interconnected smart home, often be acclaimed as the next big technological revolution: the Internet of Things.

As 2017 comes to a close, we take a moment to look back at the outstanding work done this year. From spectacular peformances, large scale installations, devices and tools to the new virtual spaces for artistic exploration – so many great projects are being added to the CAN archive! Here are a just few, 25 in total, that we and you enjoyed the most this year.

Created by the Responsive Environments team at the MIT Media Lab, the ‘FabricKeyboard’ explores the concept of stretchable fabric “sensate media” as a musical instrument. The work is a response to the current developments of textile sensors, stretchable nature of knitted fabrics, and vast growth of new digital music instruments.

Make, hack, design, and code with the easiest-to-use Arduino device on the market, the Touch Board by UK based Bare Conductive is now available in the CAN shop.

Created by Román Torre and Ángeles Angulo (Rotor Studio), THERO is an object designed to allow users to manage and be aware of their data traffic in a (literally) physical way.

Created by Jelle Reith, Compass is a wearable suit designed out of three pieces with each including movable flaps that work together and ‘point’ north.

Created by Katharina Hauke and Dominik Hildebrand Marques Lopes, the MikroKontrolleur is the result of their ongoing artistic research into working with vocals and electronics live on stage. It consists of a control station that can be attached to any microphone stand with one part played using hands and optional foot pedal to extend manipulation. It’s a an instrument to play one’s voice.

Created by Stephan Bogner and Philipp Schmitt, Human Element Inc. investigates how crowdwork, such as Amazon MechanicalTurk, might be woven into everyday life in the future— and explores the topic through three speculative crowdwork services.

Created by Alex McLean (Yaxu), Spicule is an album released as a Pi Zero with high quality DAC in custom case, allowing the tracks to be remixed and reworked using the TidalCycles live coding environment.

Created by Jasna Dimitrovska as a part of her Digital Media – HfK Bremen, Master Theses, Three Machines on Transparency is comprised of three machines that by own demonstration allow the artist to synthesise philosophical concepts of different forms+ideas of transparency into the corporeality.

Created by automato, Politics of Power are speculative objects/devices/fictional artefacts that question political and social implications of network ownership/control using ideology driven distribution of electrical power as an analogy.

Created by Maxime Castelli at ECAL (Bachelor Media & Interaction Design), Nelson is a tiny connected module designed to bring life remotely to everyday objects. It’s based on a very simple foreward and backward movement as we do in the everyday life, like pushing a switch.

Created by Philipp Schmitt, Camera Restricta is a camera that locates itself via GPS and searches online for photos that have been geotagged nearby. If the camera decides that too many photos have been taken at your location, it retracts the shutter and blocks the viewfinder. You can’t take any more pictures here.

Created by Richard Vijgen, The Architecture of Radio is a site-specific iPad application that visualizes this network of networks by reversing the ambient nature of the infosphere; hiding the visible while revealing the invisible technological landscape we interact with through our devices.

Amy Whittle and Willem Kempers teamed up and choose breathing as focus, it being a vital function that can be subconscious as well as controlled.

Created by Simone Rebaudengo & Matthieu Cherubini, Ethical Things is a project that explores the effects of autonomous systems of the future, speculating what happens to the mundane and insignificant objects we rely on every day.

Created by Susanna Hertrich, Jacobson’s Fabulous Olfactometer (JFO) is a sensorial prosthesis that mimics mammalian ‘flehmen’ when air pollution levels are high. The prosthetic is modeled after a sense organ that enables certain animals to sense odourless chemicals.

Created by Francesco Tacchini, SPOOK-I is a hypothetical but operative US National Security Agency inspired machine. It mimics two surveillance techniques available to the NSA Tailored Access Operations unit, in order to expose the technology employed by state surveillance for the ‘weaponization of everyday’.
