Kynd uses openFrameworks to create pencil-like drawings of photographs:

Pencils has been the most primitive or the most basic drawing and writing tool since around the last century. It also was the one of the primary tools when I was in an art school and has been my best friend since then. Trying to simulate the tone of pencil sketches with programing codes, I reacknowledged that the beauty of of the tool lies in the delicate control of the blackness, strength and thickness of of lines, which I could hardly achieve in some of my attempts so far.

What looks like a time-lapse recording of bioluminescent critters roaming the deep sea floor is in fact a swarm of 9 autonomous UV light emitting robots inhabiting a 1 x 2 meter phosphorescent surface. Created by Mey Lean Kronemann, a Berlin-based media artist with an interest in robotics, these lumiBots (2010-2011) tirelessly trace the fading trails of their peers. An endless pursuit that, much like a computational drawing machine, generates glowing patterns of visual complexity out of a simple system.

Last year, onedotzero approached Joanie Lemercier of AntiVJ to be part of one of their event, a festival they organised at empac, upstate New York, with a selection of screenings, installations and live performances. The installation, now on show at the China Millennium Monument Museum of Digital Arts onedotzero event, has received fantastic feedback and high acclaim. Just as the team published video describing the project (above), we asked Joanie few questions about the installation.

Joanie: The original plan was to fly to empac to do a 3 weeks residency, to develop a new project from scratch, which would involve projection mapping onto objects, a sound track by minimal techno producer Sleeparchive, and potentially a live performance on the day of the opening. As the video explains, the original idea and schedule felt apart when the volcano erupted, and the 3 weeks long residency turned into just 5 days on site, to setup the installation and prepare a live performance…

The AntiMap by Trent Brooks is an Open Source creative toolset for recording and visualising your own data. The project currently consists of a phone utility application (AntiMap Log – iOS/Android) for data capture, and a couple of web/desktop applications (AntiMap Simple (Javascript) and AntiMap Video (oF)) for post analysis and data visualisation.

The mobile application uses the GPS and Compass sensors on your phone to extract and store the following data: latitude, longitude, compass direction, speed (kph), distance (kms), time (milliseconds), and finally an input field for optional points of interest. Recorded data is saved to a CSV file at 30 FPS with filenames matching the date & time they were created. Eg: ‘150811_1230_08.csv’, was created on the 15th August 2011, at 12:30pm and 8 seconds. For Android users, files can be retrieved from the ‘AntiMap’ folder on the SD card. For iPhone users, files can be retrieved from your device in iTunes/Apps/AntiMap Log Documents (just under the ‘File Sharing’ heading). The mobile applications are free and Open Source, with Processing (Android) and Openframeworks (iPhone). Source code is provided in hope that users can learn from and find interesting ways to visualise their data.

Created by onformative, studio founded by Julia Laub and Cedric Kiefer in Berlin, Actelion Imagery is an application built for Actelion, a biopharmaceutical company that researches, develops and markets medicines for diseases that still lack adequate treatments. Project brief was to create a new identity for their brand without touching the logo, but in keeping with Actelion activities. The team developed a custom Processing application that builds on a range of algorithms to generate both still and animated assets for brochures and website.

The new imagery is based on the smallest possible unit: digital molecules. These capture the magical moment when new medicine arises from molecules; innovative design for a company that supplies the world with innovations. We worked closely together with Interbrand in creating the graphic imagery and developed a tool for automatic image generation that enables the generation of a unique, in-itself homogeneous graphic image world out of heterogeneous visual material.

Inspired by the neo-dadaist collages of Robert Rauschenberg, about a year ago James Alliban decided to write software which would allow him to quickly paint using using a webcam. In March this year, when the iPad 2 was released with both a front and back facing camera, James saw this as an opportunity to make a mobile version.

Composite allows you to remix your surroundings to create compositions. Users can paint pictures using live video stream by simply pointing their iPad towards your subject drawing over it. A variety of control over the brush and video stream is offered to allow for a range of different aesthetics. These include brightness, contrast, colour offset, alpha, blur and thickness.

Created and published by CreativeApplications.Net, SKTCH is a generative drawing application for the iPhone / iPod Touch and now iPad. Version 2.0 brings a whole new UI utilising Apple’s UIKit, for the iPhone – retina display support, two new presets, and finally after months of development we have released the iPad version.

iPad is where SKTCH really comes to life. The larger screen, new 3D mode and the new UI allows you to truly immerse yourself in your creations. During the development we have found that features such as file open/save do not really work particularly well with the iPhone, likewise the edit more allowing you to move points with tap and drag. There are some of many features we would like to implement in the iPad version, of course, if there is a demand. Thus, iPad version of SKTCH is published as a separate app rather than as a universal.

Please note that by purchasing SKTCH you directly help CAN, so we appreciate your support. Thank you.

For more information on SKTCH, see http://sktchapp.com or download the press pack.

In addition to SKTCH, RetroScreen has also received an update now supporting reina display on iPhone 4. RetroScreen source is now also available for download from github.

Human Interference Project is a tribute to Jean Tinguely’s Métamatics organized by the Métamatic Research Initiative. The team are creating a collection of hand-drawn mathematical figures governed by a simple set of rules. The repetitive and parameter-restricted character of the drawings draws one one much similar to machine production although in this instance is much about emphasising the human creative expression.

A number of artists were invited to produce a drawing which you can now find on the website. Each drawing was produced by following these five rules:
1. Use a white A4 sheet and a ballpoint pen.
2. Draw a closed shape on the paper.
3. Repeat the shape inside the original shape until there is no space left at its centre. Repeat the shape outside the original shape until it touches one side of the paper. Choose the distance so that you can make at least 50 iterations on the paper.
4. Try to repeat each iteration in exactly the same way.
5. Sign the drawing in its upper right corner in landscape format.

Note the beautiful interference patterns created as you move drawings over one another.

The Human Interference Project forms the basis for the new MRI website, online by May 2011 which will be a communal platform for all material around the artistic and academic research into Tinguely’s Métamatics.

‘The Simple Act of Making a Mark’ by Alan Rorie is a recursive drawing machine that attempts to abstract the creative process. The machine begins by looking at what is placed before it and detects patterns within it. The machine then traces those subtle patterns, amplifying and solidifying them until generative patterns emerge autonomously.

The Simple Act of Making a Mark began when I was imagining what would happen if you cyclically 3d printed and 3d scanned an object, and although this is a project I’m working on, I realized that I could explore this space faster if I limited it to two dimensions. The original idea was to use a pen and a fresh sheet of paper with each loop. But late one night I put some table salt on the drawing platform to see what would happen and I loved the result. I view this work as a platform rather then work that has a completion point. In the future I’m going to experiment with different drawing media and styluses.

The installation uses an Arduino Uno, an AdaFruit Motor Shield, a single USB HD web camera is used for both the computer vision and to build a time lapse movie of each loop. The software is built using Processing with Messenger, controlP5, fullscreen libraries, and v3ga blobDetection. In addition gCode command structure was used and Bresenham’s line algorithm to determine where and when the steppers should move.
