Created by a new collective consisting of Ben Cerveny, Tom Carden, Jesper Sparre Andersen and Robert Hodgin, Planetary by Bloom is a way to explore your music collection using planetary system as an analogy. Application, created using Cinder framework allows you to navigate dynamically created by information about the recording artists you love. Fly thorough the stars that represent your favourite artists, visit planets (albums) or listen to the moons (tracks).

Artists Are Stars - Every star in Planetary represents an artist from your music library.
Albums Are Planets - They orbit around their artist star. The planet surface is derived from the album cover art. No two planets are the same.
Tracks Are Moons - They orbit at a speed based on the length of the track. The size of the moon is based on the play count.
Filter Artists By Letter - Create a constellation of highlighted stars by filtering artist names by their first character

Planetary is a free download and available in the AppStore. It is the first of many apps Bloom Studio are planning to release in the coming months.

Super Pikix is a free VJ software for the portable console Caanoo created by Piklipita, duo of visual artists based in London, UK & Wroclaw, Poland. The Caanoo is an open-source, Linux-based handheld video game console and media player (wikipedia) priced at about US $150.

The Caanoo device fits into your pocket, it includes a touch screen, powered by a rechargeable battery and in addition to SD card storage it also includes a composite video out (PAL and NTSC supported). The Super Pikix software supports two video layers to be blended together, allows you to save and load playlists, special effects and filters and has a video resolution output of 320×240 pixels.

Piklipita is also the author of VJ-tools for Playstation 2, Nintendo GBA and soon to come PIKI900, VJ Software for Nokia N900. When it comes to the iOS platform, Piklipita have collaborated with Lingouf to create kovoclak and runkovo.

Launched in 2007, Poolga today is a must destination for iPhone wallpapers. It brings together both small and big names in graphic design and illustration, offering wallpaper downloads of selected works for both iPhone and iPad. Recently Poolga has also launched tseventy.com, in the similar spirit, hand picked photography edition from selected photographers from around the world.

I’ve known Juan for a while now and I am very pleased to see that their first iPhone app is now available in the AppStore. Beautifully executed, the app is pure Poolga. You swipe up for artist info, swipe left for next image, save image to library, tweet and a quick link to artist’s website. Simple, clean and all you could ask for.

LiveView works very similar to VNC clients and servers except instead of viewing the whole screen you move the iPhone image on the screen to isolate an area you’d like to view on your iPhone. Few weeks ago Takayuki mentioned a project he was working on. To my usual interest, few DMs were exchanged on Twitter finding out it’s a children’s animated book conceptualized by Mobile Art Lab that comes with a physical book you can order through amazon.jp. Considering I have an 8-month old daughter, I was very excited. Very small children and technology don’t always necessarily go together. It seems that after numerous attempts I have finally managed to teach her that once I said ‘NO’, at somewhat elevated tone, she’d stop putting the iPhone in her mouth. Instead she chooses to completely release it out of her hands resulting in a drop, meaning that word NO usually goes with catch the iPhone before it hits the ground.

Last week, I got a DM from Takayuki saying the book is in the mail and within few days it arrived in the office and what a wonderful packaging showing the book right through the wrapping. Of course, this was no place to open it regardless of the co-workers with children eager to see it working with the iPhone. Having arrived home, the wrapping came off pretty quick. Mia (my daughters name) is currently at that age when she wants to touch everything and most recently developed a fascination with book covers. She would listen to the story and watch pages being flipped and every so often she would stretch her arms out flipping the book to show the cover. The same was with the PhoneBook where my attempts to show her the pages would have her flipping it back to the cover. Once we have put the iPhone inside the PhoneBook, having taken out white padding that the book comes with, and launched the iPhone app, the book came alive. Each page is unique containing characters in different locations. The distinction between the physical book and iPhone is maintained where what you see on the iPhone is usually the background to the context book creates. For example POPO and MOMO (book characters) are on the train and iPhone shows the landscape with trees and bushes which release apples, birds and more once touched. In another scene the characters are in a submarine and you touch the sea to let the submarine descend, once in the deep tap to gather the fish or to see more fish touch and hold the screen for a while. The full descriptions of each scene is available here and I highly recommend, if you have a little one, is to download the iPhone app regardless of whether you get the book or not. Beautiful music accompanied by wonderful illustrations and a story simple for anyone including the grownup moms and dads to enjoy. Of course, having both the book and iPhone app together is the real treat. For now, Mia is loving it regardless of her being maybe a little young for it. One year and up is probably age I would recommend, nevertheless the app has been made in a way to avoid accidental quits and simple taps on the screen will create enough visual variety and sound for even the little ones to enjoy.

Soundrop is a sound toy application for iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch which allows you to create sounds by drawing lines on the screen and have ball bouncing off them. Each time the ball touches the line, a sound is generated. Depending on the location of the line on the screen, the tone of the sound is set. You can move the ball emitter, changing the nature of the composition. You can modify the location of lines by dragging points that define them alternatively double tap on any line will clear it. Tap on the objects to make sounds or turn on/off music loops. Drag the train left and right to scratch. You can record up to 10 beat sequences and play back as a loop using the record and play buttons (at bottom right).
