Hemesh is an exciting Processing library by Frederik Vanhoutte (W:Blut) that can be used to create elaborate 3D shapes quickly. It is an implementation of the half-edge datastructure, hence the name Hemesh. What makes this datastructure interesting is it’s inherent ability to store connectivity information. So it’s much more than just a list of vertices and faces. Rather it’s about the efficient description of connections between them. This kind of information comes in handy when you want to manipulate, distort and creatively destroy three-dimensional shapes in a sensible manner.

The starting point is a mesh, for example one of the built-in primitives. Think box, cone, sphere. But you could also go half-edge on your own custom meshes. Anyway, the real fun starts in step two: modifiers and subdividors. There are many to play with. You can use those to change your initial shape. Accumulatively! So it’s possible to use (almost) any series of modifiers, one after the other. You can imagine this allows for a very diverse range of combinations. Better show than tell, so below I’ve selected works by a few different people who have been working with Hemesh. In addition check out the Hemesh Flickr tag for many more examples.

3D printed Hemesh shapes by Corneel Cannaert / intr0spector (Flickr)

While playing with the Hemesh library, I developed a gui using the controlP5 library by Andreas Schlegel. Although still a bit generic, it allows me to rapidly prototype different options. You start with a shape, then add any combination of modifiers. I decided to share all the source code for this project. In the past few days I’ve cleaned up and commented the code as much as possible. I hope it’s useful for someone. There are two versions. HemeshGui and HemeshGuiLight. The only difference is in their Sunflow rendering capabilities. The former can, while the latter cannot. Check out a high resolution and fully annotated version of the gui here. The video below shows some of HemeshGui’s basic functionalities.

Note that there are no built-in limitations. Meaning, with a few mouseclicks you can make any combination of modifiers and settings you want. Including those combinations that will bring your computer to a screeching halt due to the sheer amount of faces & vertices. Or worse. Just be sensible and retrace your steps when the console output turns red ;-) On the upside, HemeshGui currently holds 10 primitives, 15 modifiers, 5 subdividors and built-in Sunflow rendering functionality through Christopher Warnow’s SunflowApiApi.

You can get the latest version of Hemesh (beta 1.3.0) from here. Several examples and tutorials are included in the package to help get you started. You can download the latest version of HemeshGui and/or HemeshGuiLight from here. On the the download page you will also find detailed installation instructions to get everything up and running. Try it!

Nominated as the finalist for IGF 2011, Hazard: The Journey Of Life, created by Alexander Bruce aka Demruth is a philosophical first person single player environmental puzzle game.

Built using Unreal Engine 3, Hazard is a response to the monotony of popular games and Demruth desire to create a game he always wanted to create. Starting with simple rules such as removing ability to shoot in the first person shooter type game, Hazard focuses on immersive experience of something that resembles Snake, but instead of controlling a snake, it is you navigating the virtual space, exploring and discovering and defining goals for yourself.

Lets go back to the beginning. The development of “Hazard” technically started at the end of 2006 when I created the Dynamic Geometry system. It started out as an abstract prototype for Snake, and I somehow ended up with a cool way to build levels that were completely mutable. Back at this stage, Hazard got its name because the game was all about being violent and having the world kill the player if they weren’t skillful enough. Although Hazard existed as a multiplayer arena combat game, I was more interested in seeing what I could do with the geometry itself. I spent about 6 months working on it at this stage, which was also 6 months of learning the Unreal Engine, before I decided that I wouldn’t get it all working smoothly over a network, and I put the system down. more

The game is not avaialable for download just yet but you can follow the development on Demruth’s blog including read about general thoughts and processes that have influenced how the game has developed into what can only be described as layers of imagination driven by personal pursual to create and change.

B.A. thesis project of Stephan Thiel at the Interfacedesign program of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam, Understanding Shakespeare is an attempt to create a new visual understanding of the work by analysing most frequently used words for each character. Using Processing, a scene is represented by a block of text and scaled relatively according to its number of words. Characters are ordered by appearance from left to right throughout the play. The major character’s speeches are highlighted to illustrate their amounts of spoken words as compared to the rest of the play.

The visualizations were designed as large scale prints (90cm x ~220cm) for an exhibition scenario that would enable a broad audience tore-understand Shakespeare. They were created using mainly Processing and toxiclibs (for geometry and color calculations) as well as several other Natural Language Processing libraries (i.e. Classifier4J).

Soundrop is a sound toy application for iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch which allows you to create sounds by drawing lines on the screen and have ball bouncing off them. Each time the ball touches the line, a sound is generated. Depending on the location of the line on the screen, the tone of the sound is set. You can move the ball emitter, changing the nature of the composition. You can modify the location of lines by dragging points that define them alternatively double tap on any line will clear it. Wonderfully simple and a lot of fun to play with. Check it out..it’s free.

Grid is an open source visual synthesiser application designed for rhythmic, melodic, or textural applications. An exploration in frequency of sound and how it may be visualised. Developer description:

But has joy gone blind? No; there are primary colors in sound. There are primitives to sound, to the psychological constituents of sound; though there is a one to one correspondence between frequency and the reals, frequency is a property rather than a depiction of palpable tone. In this sense, the algorithm used is structurally formative rather than exhaustively descriptive of the sounds produced.

Simple but lovely little dynamics app; Turn Around, created by coolap. There isn’t much word on the dev or previous work and it appears that the blog has been set-up just for this app. In the app, you tap to add point sprites and they will start moving around and colliding with one another. At an appropriate distance a small sprite may be captured and will keep turning around a bigger one depending on the hierarchy of small vs larger sprites. Demo (lite) version is also available.

Features:
- up to 500 point sprites
- select the color and the size of the sprite
- change the style of the sprites (18 styles)
- show/hide toolbars
- tune up/down the turning speed
- shake to randomize the position of the sprites
