The Software (Corrupt.Video) allows its users to glitch videos stored on their computer, videos from their webcam or their desktop in realtime. When a clip is recorded, a 10 seconds video and an animated GIF are saved locally and automatically uploaded to uglitch.com. Currently only available for Mac, iPhone/iPad version is in the works.

Glitch Reality II [Objects]

Following from Glitch Reality No1 commissioned by It’s Nice That for Nike, Glitch Reality 2 by Matthew Plummer-Fernandez and David Gardener is a new iteration of exploring physical objects in glitch form. The process is an interesting one, applying digital methodology to alter physical objects. Matthew Plummer-Fernandez explains:

A tea set was created by purchasing non-matching tea set components, scanning them with a Z-corporation 3D scanner and roughly repairing the digital mesh files. The mesh files are then 3D printed to create an instance of this tea-set data that inherits the glitches from the analogue-to-digital-to-analogue translation.

Also below is short animation experiment Matthew made using a crude 3D scan of his friends baby Harriet.

The meshing algorithm curiously created a caccoon from fragments of scanned baby pram, which inspired the title of the piece.

After 5 successful days of glitchy art, hacking/coding workshops, discussions, screenings, lectures and audio/video performances in Chicago in 2010, GLI.TC/H is spreading this year to include 3 different cities; from Chicago on NOV: 4TH, 5TH, & 6TH, Amsterdam on NOV 11 & 12 to Birmingham in the UK on NOV: 19.

GLI.TC/H was a simple idea that was hatched upon the notion of folks gathering together and engaging/chatting/debating the issues/theories/concerns of failure, systems, art, && glitches. This year, the team are opening frameworks and structures to involve the community at core levels including curation and organization. For example, Kim Asendorf (fa-g.org & gifmarket.net) is curating an online component and Antonio Roberts (AKA hellocatfood) initiated and is leading the Birminham: UK; component. Many more artists and curators are investing their talents.

GLI.TC/H is both a physical and virtual event with always-on online games, galleries, easter-eggs, downloadable artware, scavenger hunts, APIs, and loads of other experimental components. These activities will continue through-out and beyond the physical events.

Created by Kim Asendorf, ExtraFile is conceptional software with practical usage. It’s main intention is to offer an alternative to the static system of image file formats. It is also an attempt to address an alternative image file format, a piece of art, far away from the mainstream and commercial standards.

The freedom not to have to pay attention to the file size or the loading and saving times provides the option to implement artistically byte orders, odd quality behaviours and visual designed formats. ExtraFile is breaking the rules of commercial formats like JPG, PNG or TIFF. It is a pioneer art project in storing image data. The process and the resulting bytes, regardless of content, become the artwork itself.

Android 7″ tablet optimised album release from Precocious Mouse and friends, this app created by Caleb Wood, a musician working in London, combines sounds, generative visuals and photography accompanying each audio track. The text is supplied by invited artists, musicians, and composers.

The sound is typically characterised as glitch, with an abstract approach to rhythm and construction. Individual sounds are often sourced and microsamples from a variety of sources, from recordings of electricity meters to raw data translations of Polish driver education manual pdfs

glitch.js is a javascript by undef collective that takes the content on your site and creates glitch type effect. Install is really simple, download the library, wrap in what you want to use as source and to call the start glitch function anywhere to start the fake glitch. If you want existing div glitched, just change it in the glitch.js with find and replace.

Created as a net artwork by Ted Davis, TEXT2IMAGE is both a web app and now iPhone/iPad app that explores the nature of digital media through the use of JPG format or better know as glitch. The app uses JPG corruption technique to visualise any word, phrase or ‘story’.

Within the realms of cross-media visualization and glitch aesthetics, TEXT2IMAGE investigates alternative ways to create an image and analyze texts.

You can switch between color <-> b/w imagery, type any text and see it converted into an image you can save to your library or share by email. Likewise, your images are automatically uploaded to the online database and you can view up to 25 recently created images within the app.

Fach & Asendorf Gallery [Scripts]

Founded in 2010 by the architect and artist Ole Fach and the media artist Kim Asendorf, the gallery finally has a place to show the latest works of their favorite artists. Soon on display are a number of established artists using digital media and internet as a stage. The exhibition kicks off with the works by Emilio Gomariz and Andrey Yazev.

The Fach & Asendorf Gallery opened its exhibition space, online in the internet on http://fa-g.org.

Online exhibitions will become an important part of the art scene in the next years, and for the Fach & Asendorf Gallery it will be the basement and future of their action. The main focus is on screen or display related art, but you could also see fresh documentations about installations, paintings, performance or sculptures. But that is just the beginning, they are going to organize in house exhibitions in other galleries, museums and art spaces around the world. And, in the end, they will become a real life gallery.

Generative Photography [Processing]

In the last few weeks Ishac Bertran has been making experiments in the area of “Generative Photography”. He describes the process where the digital drawings are sequentially projected on to a screen in a dark room and photographed using long exposure times. As in generative art, this photography technique uses an algorithm that is polluted with a certain randomness. The randomness comes from rendering imperfections and the asynchrony between the frame rate of the video signal and the refresh rate of the projector.

Glitches are unique, almost impossible to reproduce, and usually imperceptible to the naked eye. This technique gives shape to these digital glitches and captures their unpredictable beauty…The experiments pursue an artistic exploration to achieve a certain aesthetic outcome more than a research on computer engineering…

Most recent experiments analyze the glitches caused by the rendering and the asynchrony between the frame rate of the video signal and the refresh rate of the projector. Running a Processing sketch and then photographed, he uses various photographic techniques including exposure, speed, framerates to seek out the glitches sometimes caused by the computer monitor or graphics card and sometimes what is caught in between the digital and analogue mediums.
