Last year, onedotzero approached Joanie Lemercier of AntiVJ to be part of one of their event, a festival they organised at empac, upstate New York, with a selection of screenings, installations and live performances. The installation, now on show at the China Millennium Monument Museum of Digital Arts onedotzero event, has received fantastic feedback and high acclaim. Just as the team published video describing the project (above), we asked Joanie few questions about the installation.

Joanie: The original plan was to fly to empac to do a 3 weeks residency, to develop a new project from scratch, which would involve projection mapping onto objects, a sound track by minimal techno producer Sleeparchive, and potentially a live performance on the day of the opening. As the video explains, the original idea and schedule felt apart when the volcano erupted, and the 3 weeks long residency turned into just 5 days on site, to setup the installation and prepare a live performance…

Last September, GML group launched The GML Field Recorder Challenge. The project was an invitation to artists and hackers to design a DIY hardware and software solution for unobtrusively recording graffiti motion data during a graffiti writer’s normal practice in the city. The winning project would receive 1,200 euros.

Earlier this year, our guest writer and contributor Joshua Noble took on the challenge by creating a custom piece of hardware for recording graffiti tags that costs no more than $170.97 or 126.81 Euros. The setup is simply based around using an optical mouse that knows how it’s being tilted. The ultra-bright LED was installed to ensure that the mouse can read properly off the wall, a combination of special lenses, acrylic cut casing, batteries, SDCard slot, Teensy++ board, and a bunch of wires. Once you have your tagged data saved on the SDCard, it’s easy enough to use it in one of freely available GML processing/openFrameworks apps to visualize or cut templates.

NTQ, also known as Near Tag Quality (+), is a DIY graffiti printer created using Arduino, Solenoid and 7 Spray cans. Created by the french branch of GRL (Graffiti Research Lab) this project was developed in 2 month between mid-may and mi-July. The idea is not new but their goal was to build something and opensource it. The single spray system uses a solenoïd valve with a number of transistors to get enough voltage from the low signal issued by the Arduino board. The whole thing costing about 200€.

Kinect Graffiti Tool is work in progress by Jean-Christophe Naour, Seoul (Korea) based designer. Idea behind the project is to use Kinect to track the motion of graffiti, not too dissimilar from Graffiti Analysis project by Evan Roth. Instead of visualising only hand gestures, Jean-Christophe’s Processing application visualizes body and drawing trough different angles in realtime, attempting to understand surrounding space, etc…using light painting as a reference.

This clip and images below show the latest test, focused on the generation of 3d strokes + openGL mapping. Earlier version also included at the bottom of the post.

Libraries used: peasycam (camera), controlP5 (gui/control), oscP5 (osc), opengl (textures), toxiclibs (3d vertex, vectors).

EyeWriter needs your help!

One year ago, graffiti artist Tony Quan (aka TEMPT1) teamed up with a group of artists from the Graffiti Research Lab, OpenFrameworks and Free Art and Technology communities to develop free and open source eye tracking and drawing software that has helped him make art again for the first time since being hospitalized. In 2003, TEMPT1 was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease), a degenerative neuromuscular disorder that causes paralysis and ultimately death. Over the course of 5 years, he lost the ability to move his arms and legs, speak, eat and even breathe without life-support systems. Not only is he drawing again, but he’s creating new and complex letter forms, designing font libraries and evolving a brand new style using new and old technology in ways no one could have imagined. After seven years of paralysis, Tony has again become a pioneer in a new community of creative individuals who refuse to let neuromuscular diseases stop them from expressing themselves through art.

The team has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the money Tony needs to create a new collection of original TEMPT1 artwork and merchandise using the EyeWriter 2.0 software, robotic technology, traditional print-making techniques, as well as his community of friends, fans and peers.

Supporting this campaign will not only allow TEMPT1 to continue to make art and express his ideas, but it will give him a chance to again become a professional artist, independently support himself and his family, pay for his medical bills, and make a contribution to the contemporary art world.

Please, take a moment today and donate as little as $1 (everything counts!) in support of EyeWriter >
Kickstarter Page

100% of the $15,000 goal will go directly to TEMPT1 to help produce his art, cover his hospital costs and help support his family. Anything above that amount will be split 50/50 between TEMPT1 and research and development costs for future versions and improvements of the EyeWriter system.

The fantastic Graffiti Analysis 3.0 application by Evan Roth and Chris Sugrue is now available for download! For those unfamiliar with the project, GA is an extensive ongoing study in the motion of graffiti. Custom software designed for graffiti writers creates visualizations of the often unseen gestures involved in the creation of a tag. Motion data is recorded, analyzed and archived as Graffiti Markup Language (.gml) files, a specifically formatted XML file designed to be a common open structure for archiving gestural graffiti motion data. GML files are saved in an open online database, 000000book.com, where writers can share analytical representations of their hand styles.

The 3.0 app includes the following new features:
- Input from iPhone + anything you can strap the light onto.
- Audio input which affects particles generated from the tag – perfect for live events
- Keyword based RSS .gml player / search for a keyword and let the app play all the tags
- 3D Printing Integration – Print your tags!!
- ”Interactive Architecture” – allows interaction of projected graffiti with objects that receive the projection (buildings)..
- Laser Input – tag buildings from long distances.. (need big a** monster projector)
- Stereography..

More + download at graffitianalysis.com (mac OSX only for the time being..windows/linux soon)

Created by Victor Martins aka pixelnerve, Graffiti Viscosity are Processing experiments exploring the possibilities of using GML data type with shader library Victor created. If you are unfamiliar with GML (Graffiti Markup Language), it is a new XML file type specifically designed by FAT for archiving graffiti tags. We have mentioned a number of GML projects in the past, to name a few Graffiti Analysis, Laser Tag, Fat Tag Deluxe and EyeWriter.

In Victor’s examples, GML is built into processing app, allowing a different type visualisation of graffiti information.

Graffiti Viscosity is created using victamin library for Processing.

UPDATE 09/09/2010: Now available for download (Mac+Windows).

Golan has just announced the immediate availability of GMLStenciler, an open-source software project for converting Graffiti Markup Language (GML) drawings into vector-art stencils suitable for laser cutting. This free tool solves the problem of transforming GML’s widthless linear strokes into adjustably-thickened stencil patterns with automatically bridged islands. GMLStenciler is built in openFrameworks and can be downloaded here (with complete source code) for Windows and Mac OSX.

If you are unfamiliar with GML, in January 2010 the F.A.T. Their flagship system is the Graffiti Analysis software by Chris Sugrue and Evan Roth, which allows GML drawings to be recorded with an iPhone, uploaded to an online database, and freely shared at the #000000book.com website. Users of Graffiti Analysis have contributed some 17,500 tags to date. As with Golan’s Robotagger project, the GMLStenciler software presented here offers a means by which these virtual handwritten marks can be given physical form, made multiple, and economically disseminated at a variety of scales.

The GMLStenciler software was entirely developed by Charlie, Golan’s 15-year-old (!!!) intern, during June 2010. Using OpenCV, the system then automatically detects “holes” in the rendered tag (such as would be produced by the closed counters within characters like A, B, D, O, P, Q, R, etc.) The user can select one of several methods by which these holes will be automatically bridged. Options for this operation include: bridging at the top point of each counter, bridging at the nearest point to the counter’s enclosing stroke, etc. These can then be exported as an EPS and loaded into CAD programs or vector art editors like Illustrator or CorelDraw.
