Created by Lasal, graphic programmer, designer, VJ and computer artist based in Berlin, Hexagrama explores the quality of time and how the geometrical coincidences change our perception of the musical composition. Running in realtime, Hexagrama was created using vvvv with midi data send to Usine. All geometrical occurrences are preprogrammed.

Flourish is a musical toy and composition tool for the iPhone. The helvetica bold and beautiful interface allows you to quickly build diverse and complex arrangements. Organised around clusters of objects, each elements has it’s own loop and is triggered by it’s arrangment and proximity to other elements. The app includes example compositions to have a play with and although slightly tricky to understand at first you will quickly find yourself creating very interesting sound as well as graphic compositions.

Few months since our preview of Little Bugger, the game is finally now available in the AppStore. Crafted in beautiful black and white, Little Bugger is a take on entomophobia (fear of insects). Squash as many insects as possible without letting any get away. Grid is an open source visual synthesiser application designed for rhythmic, melodic, or textural applications. An exploration in frequency of sound and how it may be visualised. Developer description:

But has joy gone blind? No; there are primary colors in sound. There are primitives to sound, to the psychological constituents of sound; though there is a one to one correspondence between frequency and the reals, frequency is a property rather than a depiction of palpable tone. In this sense, the algorithm used is structurally formative rather than exhaustively descriptive of the sounds produced.

Simple but lovely little dynamics app; Turn Around, created by coolap. There isn’t much word on the dev or previous work and it appears that the blog has been set-up just for this app. In the app, you tap to add point sprites and they will start moving around and colliding with one another. At an appropriate distance a small sprite may be captured and will keep turning around a bigger one depending on the hierarchy of small vs larger sprites. Demo (lite) version is also available.

ShapeSeq is a wonderfully simple sound sequencer created by Paul Apfrod using openFrameworks. Primitive shapes represent four oscillators you can choose from. As each shape is moved around the screen, the pitch and volume moves with it. Every shape has it’s own loop, and every movement is recorded on the loop for instant playback. As the loop can be varied by size and number of steps while it is playing.

Coloroll is a simple but beautiful color matching game brought to you by soulbit7. You start with the base colors that are the root of the game. From these three colors, Coloroll suggests a target color. Your goal is to match the mixing area to the target color by adding and reducing portions from the three base colors. Once you succeed in matching the target, Coloroll gives yo a new target to match. Don’t like the target color? Drag the target down to the cube and Coloroll will generate a new color.

After you successfully match three colors, you move to the selection screen. This is a crucial part of the game. By selecting three new colors, you keep the game open and versatile, while by slelecting nuances of the colors you have just worked with, you go deeper into the nuances of color. Each time you finish a level, Coloroll divides the pallet a step further, making the game more challenging and interesting, and taking you deeper into the kingdon of colors.

Simple, clean, bold with wonderful screen transitions. There is also a lite version to download so no reason why not try today.

Created by Simon Strandgaard, Graphic Designer Toolbox is an alternative graphics editor. Instead of manipulating graphics directly as you do in Photoshop, in GDT you build blocks for bitmap and vector manipulation. Not too dissimilar from Quarz Composer, GDT allows you to create generative artworks using visual object based programming. It’s all created realtime, non destructive and easy to learn.

You start out with an empty grid, insert a Photo building block, combine with many other effector blocks and adjust the parameter. The great thing is that you can create assets. In other words, you have made this cool web button out of a few building blocks but at some point you need a variation of this button. All you have to do is to copy it and adjust a few parameters. Within seconds you have your new button.

Whilst i haven’t yet had a chance to play with the app properly, it does nevertheless sound like a great way to remove yourself from the traditions of thinking about image graphically and more about construction. If the process is as important for you as the final outcome, you should definitely give Graphic Designer Toolbox a go. A demo version is available and the full version will cost you $42.94 (€29.95).
