Kynd uses openFrameworks to create pencil-like drawings of photographs:

Pencils has been the most primitive or the most basic drawing and writing tool since around the last century. It also was the one of the primary tools when I was in an art school and has been my best friend since then. Trying to simulate the tone of pencil sketches with programing codes, I reacknowledged that the beauty of of the tool lies in the delicate control of the blackness, strength and thickness of of lines, which I could hardly achieve in some of my attempts so far.

In the last few years we have seen a number of projects that utilise delaunay triangulation to translate photographs into their geometric representations. Jonathan Puckey’s Delaunay Raster was the first to utilise this combination of delaunay triangulation with manually placed points and color averaging. Jonathan’s images, most of us have seen already, have inspired a wave of projects.

Latest project that utilises a very similar technique is DMesh, a custom software made in Cinder by Dofl Yun that analyzes an image and generate a triangle meshes with points. Included in the app is also manual mode so a user can add more points to get more detail or delete existing points. Users can also export an image as either a bitmap image or a vector image. See video below.

It all kicked off about 2 months ago when Kyle McDonald posted ‘FaceOSC’, a tool for prototyping face-based interaction. The oF wrapper Kyle created is built on non-commercial open source FaceTracker code from Jason Saragih. Kyle included an example oF app with the ofxFaceTracker addon for openFrameworks which can be downloaded here.

Then few days ago, Arturo Castro carried on the work by exploring different face substitution techniques. Using the same library, mesh obtained from a photo is matched to his own face in the video. Applying some color interpolation algorithms from Kevin Atkinson’s image clone code: methodart.blogspot.com/ gives it the blending effect that can be seen in the final footage.

Now only few minutes ago, Kyle posted this video, named “Scramble Suit” inspired by fictional technology from Philip K. Dick’s 1977 novel, “A Scanner Darkly”. It’s effectively a cloak that hides the identify of the wearer by making it impossible to describe or remember them. Kyle points to an excerpt here.

Very exciting bunch of face tracking experiments. Looking forward to see what come next…

The spectacle and surplus masculinity of Hollywood is hardly run-of-the-mill source material for generative art, but Canadian software artist Jeremy Rotsztain has been diligently exploring transforming cinematic convention into rich, abstract compositions for three years now. Rotsztain’s Action Painting project (first featured on CAN in fall 2009) employs scenes and sound design—’data’ from action movies—as raw material to generate abstract expressionist style animations. “Revving Motors, Spinning Wheels” (below) is one of four videos released by Rotsztain this summer that illustrate just how far this project has come – the piece reads as a love letter to both Jackson Pollock and Jason Bourne. On close viewing the source material (culled from Ronin, The French Connection, etc.) is clearly organized thematically and the video functions as a serial examination of the stock components of definitive chase scenes. Screeching brakes, blaring sirens, lead-footed acceleration and the inevitable Ballardian-endgame all filter through the mix in clusters of topical clips.

Created by Kim Asendorf, ExtraFile is conceptional software with practical usage. It’s main intention is to offer an alternative to the static system of image file formats. It is also an attempt to address an alternative image file format, a piece of art, far away from the mainstream and commercial standards.

The freedom not to have to pay attention to the file size or the loading and saving times provides the option to implement artistically byte orders, odd quality behaviours and visual designed formats. ExtraFile is breaking the rules of commercial formats like JPG, PNG or TIFF. It is a pioneer art project in storing image data. The process and the resulting bytes, regardless of content, become the artwork itself.

Created by onformative, studio founded by Julia Laub and Cedric Kiefer in Berlin, Actelion Imagery is an application built for Actelion, a biopharmaceutical company that researches, develops and markets medicines for diseases that still lack adequate treatments. Project brief was to create a new identity for their brand without touching the logo, but in keeping with Actelion activities. The team developed a custom Processing application that builds on a range of algorithms to generate both still and animated assets for brochures and website.

The new imagery is based on the smallest possible unit: digital molecules. These capture the magical moment when new medicine arises from molecules; innovative design for a company that supplies the world with innovations. We worked closely together with Interbrand in creating the graphic imagery and developed a tool for automatic image generation that enables the generation of a unique, in-itself homogeneous graphic image world out of heterogeneous visual material.
