The AntiMap by Trent Brooks is an Open Source creative toolset for recording and visualising your own data. The project currently consists of a phone utility application (AntiMap Log – iOS/Android) for data capture, and a couple of web/desktop applications (AntiMap Simple (Javascript) and AntiMap Video (oF)) for post analysis and data visualisation.

The mobile application uses the GPS and Compass sensors on your phone to extract and store the following data: latitude, longitude, compass direction, speed (kph), distance (kms), time (milliseconds), and finally an input field for optional points of interest. Recorded data is saved to a CSV file at 30 FPS with filenames matching the date & time they were created. Eg: ‘150811_1230_08.csv’, was created on the 15th August 2011, at 12:30pm and 8 seconds. For Android users, files can be retrieved from the ‘AntiMap’ folder on the SD card. For iPhone users, files can be retrieved from your device in iTunes/Apps/AntiMap Log Documents (just under the ‘File Sharing’ heading). The mobile applications are free and Open Source, with Processing (Android) and Openframeworks (iPhone). Source code is provided in hope that users can learn from and find interesting ways to visualise their data.

Lines is based on a writing technique from medieval times developed by monks as a solution to expensive paper and tedious writing. The monks were writing in the centre of the page allowing enough space for others to annotate the pages on the sides, method allowing you to read the story through other people’s writing. The problem arises when 5-6th person tried to comment there would be no paper space left over. As the time passed and writing material became cheaper this technique was abandoned and the techniques we used today were adopted. The team behind the project thought it would be interesting experiment to revisit the techniques using modern technologies, predominantly the “screen” as it has no borders and provides infinite space.

Educated as artists and graphic designers, trained primarily in the logics of print and haptic output, we have grown a great interest in how a transition to screen publishing, and the formats of the new media, affect the way we write, read and communicate. What are the new contracts between author and reader? How are they shaped by old and new forms, and how do new habits in writing and reading affect the way we build and share knowledge?

Baroque.me by Alexander Chen visualizes the first Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suites by drawing notes as strings. Instead of a stream of classical notation on a page, this interactive project highlights the music’s underlying structure and subtle shifts.

I created eight strings, as the Prelude’s natural phrasing is in groups of eight notes. The orbiting nodes pluck the strings, like a rotating music box. The user can also grab and throw the nodes off track, and watch the system slowly regain its rhythm. A harp is built around string length, with strings shortening as they ascend in pitch. This piece behaves like an impossible harp, as strings morph to the needed lengths. The looping, eight-note pattern is something we see all the time in grid-based drum sequencers. Bach’s Prelude is actually very grid-like as well. At every moment, the piece shows a visual snapshot of an arpeggio. It shows which notes change from bar to bar, and which stay the same.

Created by D3, digital production company based in Sao Paolo, ‘Circle of Trust’ shows your asymmetric relationship network at Google Plus.

Is there a way to visualize how each person is using and constructing this social environment?

The team wanted want to create a good real example of how the brand new Google+ API could be used. The project was inspired by Jack Byrnes, character of the movie Meet the Parents. Interpreting Jack’s theory, the team made a simple algorithm to visualize who are the people that are inside your circle of trust and who are the people out. In the visualizations the green are the people you have circled and they have circled you back, yellow is for people that you cared to circle but they didn’t, and red is for people that have circled you but you didn’t care to circle back.

We have a new feature javascript running on CAN: Revoid.js by Gwen Vanhee. Click top right corner button for demo.

Small experiments with the HTML5 canvas-element and javascript. Build from scratch to learn while playing and test javascript’s performance on mobile devices. Landscape is an animated 3D grid with a slowly fading trail, where user interaction creates infinite, always changing compositions. Terrain mapping takes image data from a picture and maps it to a 3D grid. The y-position of the gidpoints are based on color values (r+g+b). In Tiles a small 100×100 square is animated and tiled in the background, user interaction controls color and size of the circles. Patterns emerge when the circles are small enough (moving the mouse up and down).

In the past few months Marcin Ignac has been exploring Space colonization, an algorithm simulating growth of plants. Marcin explains the algorithm as 6 “simple” steps:

1. Populate possible growth space with growth hormons.
2. For each hormone find the nearest bud.
3. Grow each bud towards it's neighbor hormons. If there is none, kill the bud.
4. If a hormon is too close to a bud, remove it.
5. With every growth branch the buds with some probability.
6. Repeat until all hormons are consumed or all buds are dead.

We have a new feature javascript running on CAN: Flocking.js by Lucas Dupin. Click top right corner button for demo.

Flocking experiment done in canvas. Each particle has it’s own set of attributes and also interacts with the group, depending on environmental variables. The flocking algorithm is based on Craig Reynolds research and is based on 3 simple rules: Separation Cohesion Attraction Uses toxiclibs for vector math and all code is commented at: http://lucasdup.in/js/bg.js The idea is a bunch of individuals which try to stay together when they feel far from a ‘safe point’ (the mouse). After finding the safe spot, they spread. This is a common behaviour that can be observed in fish and birds.

Many thanks Lucas!
