Created by Julian Oliver and commissioned by the Konstmuseet i Skövde, HARVEST is a work of critical engineering and computational climate art. It uses wind-energy to mine cryptocurrency, the earnings of which are used as a source of funding for climate-change research.

A follow-up to the influential 2012 booklet series “Critical Making,” “Disobedient Electronics: Protest” is a new zine by Vancouver-based theorist and educator Garnet Hertz that uses dissent as a lens to survey electronics-based projects and practices.

Julian Oliver’s latest hardware provocation is a fake cellular tower masquerading as an HP laserjet printer. The device evokes ubiquitous ‘StingRay’ surveillance technology and the real (fake) cell towers that pepper urban landscape.

Taking place in Montréal on Oct 1st-3rd, the second edition of MUTEK_IMG takes a deep dive into the creative possibilities of VR and immersive media.

“The Crystal Line” is the latest work by critical engineer Julian Oliver. Re-creating an authentic crystal radio design that was used widely during WWI, the device broadcasts a transmission of ‘future of warfare’ chatter culled from various defence blogs that is translated from text to speech.

When Julian Oliver, Arturo Castro and James George finally get to work on Google’s most wanted/feared device. We are watching you and hope you will come soon with a project that will set the tone and give relevant food for the critical engineers we all should be.

Remote Install is an installation by Julian Oliver that remotely installs itself over the network and presents its own installation process as an artefact in itself.

The Transparency Grenade reimagines the iconic Soviet F1 hand grenade as the chassis for a personal data-leaking device.
