“The idea that digital is something new and transformative is now quite old. So the question for most creatives is not about going digital – it’s about making it feel less digital, about making participation and interaction feel post-digital; making the tech less techy. We see this reflected back in the freshest creative and cultural work and Alpha-ville is probably where you see that most vividly in this country.” Tom Uglow, Director of Creative Labs at Google.

The 2011 edition of Alpha-ville Festival provides an online and live platform to explore, test and disseminate new ideas, emerging trends, collaborations and groundbreaking works. Running from 22-25 September in London, the programme presents social media and interactive art, open labs, meet-ups, talks, workshops and screenings alongside with live music, visual performances and parties.

Gathering artists, creative coders, new media technologists, designers, architects, professionals, musicians, researchers and academics, some of the key names are: Tom Uglow (Google Creative Labs), Marius Watz, Filip Visnjic (CreativeApplications.Net), Man Bartlett, Daito Manabe, Moritz Stefaner, Keiichi Matsuda, James Alliban, Pantha Du Prince, Jon Hopkins, Jacaszek and Kangding Ray.

This year’s programme addresses the transition from a digital to a post-digital culture, that looks beneath technology at how human behaviours such as collaboration, participation and interaction have redefined the creative practice and society itself, and at how the physical boundaries between reality and online are being blurred.

Not to miss: Alpha-ville Symposium: FROM DIGITAL TO POST-DIGITAL - Friday 23rd September – featuring:

Filip Visnjic – Architect, Lecturer and Founder of Creative Applications Network

This year long project proposes to showcase the work of distinguished artists from all continents, including a British artist, with an interest in projects concerned with ways of participation, interactivity or collaboration and consider the use or importance of technologies in their work. With this we are hoping to initiate and enable a series of discussions around the meaning, possibilities and issues around human interaction and engagement in New Media art and bring in responses from artists, academics, students, art professionals and visitors in the UK and internationally.

OPEN CALL:

Interested artists can propose to show more than one installation or projects and we will welcome applications from individuals, art collectives or collaborations between artists.

We would like to invite artists to propose imaginative, ambitious and inspirational projects that will transform our understanding of art and the way it can be experienced. We will particularly focus on installations with an emphasis on participatory activity (interaction with the audience) in order to engage visitors in a creative, exploratory and inspirational journey prior to and during the Games.

Other interesting events:

Quayola Installation “Topologies” – BFI Gallery, FREE

‘Topologies’ A bespoke multi-screen installation, featuring a brand new installment of the ongoing Strata series, by regular festival contributor and artistQuayola. Following on from Quayola’s previous ‘Strata’ series, ‘Topologies’ details pre-modernist paintings which re-emerge from their centenary stillness, evolving into complex and mutable formations. Las Meninas [D. Velazquez, 1656] and Immacolata Concezione [G. Tiepolo, 1767] become topographic maps, linear pathways and structures which pulsate, diverging from the origin to produce a living abstract landscape. Topologies renews an interest in the calculative, generative and arrhythmical qualities, which lie dormant behind the details of a masterpiece… organically transforming a recognisable reality into a colour-saturated, calculated fabrication.
Sound by Matthias Kispert.

antivj: eyjafjallajokull BFI Gallery, FREE

Inspired by the icelandic volcano, which wreaked travel havoc across europe earlier this year, antivj present the latest incarnation of their audiovisual mapping project for the first time in London, painted directly onto a large wall, a wireframed scenery is slowly revealed by gentle light effects. The audience’s sense are progressively challenged as optical illusions question their perception of space.

Hellicar & Lewis and Todd Vanderlin: Feedback – BFI Southbank Foyer, FREE

Feedback is an interactive installation, which aims to encourage playful performance from members of the public. Using the familiar form of a mirror, the installation uses cutting-edge computer vision techniques to allow users to remix their bodies in real time and display them on a large scale at BFI Southbank.

Dark Fibre: Holotronica x Musion extravaganza

The BFI’s quarterly audiovisual club teams up again with onedotzero and Musion Technology, the world leader in 3D holographic projection, to present an exclusive one-off and FREE night of AV performance. Join us as we explore the space where moving image and music meet and play: expect eye-popping visuals [literally], rumbling basslines and a late night! Should your piece be one of the fifty selected by online voters, you’ll be invited to the launch at the Museum of London where you’ll have the chance to network with industry leaders and other talented Londoners. The four overall winning entries will be announced and showcased at this event, with a showreel space dedicated to presenting the winners’ showreels. The pieces will then be broadcast on the CBSO screens over our flagship two weeks which will include work by eight leading animators, directors and artists.

The London Design Festival has commissioned Clemens Weisshaar and Reed Kram to design this year’s Trafalgar Square installation.

From September 16 to 23, their project entitled OUTRACE, will empower the general public to take control of eight industrial robots on loan from Audi’s production line. Both visitors to the square, as well as a global web audience will be able to interact with the installation online. Each robot arm weighing over 1200kg with maximum reach of 3.1 meters is fitted with fluorescent lamp controlled to “draw” a letter. Logging in to http://www.outrace.org/ with a mobile device or computer, a global audience will be able to send text messages to the robots, directing the paths of the lights held by the robotic tentacles into the letter forms of the user’s text message. Long-exposure cameras capture these interactive light paintings and will email them back to the original author and the project website.

In the weeks leading up to the event, the OUTRACE installation is being built up and tested in a hall at Audi’s Ingolstadt headquarters.

Dates: 16 – 23 September, Trafalgar Square, London, UK.
