We have a new feature javascript running on CAN: Flocking.js by Lucas Dupin. Click top right corner button for demo.

Flocking experiment done in canvas. Each particle has it’s own set of attributes and also interacts with the group, depending on environmental variables. The flocking algorithm is based on Craig Reynolds research and is based on 3 simple rules: Separation Cohesion Attraction Uses toxiclibs for vector math and all code is commented at: http://lucasdup.in/js/bg.js The idea is a bunch of individuals which try to stay together when they feel far from a ‘safe point’ (the mouse). After finding the safe spot, they spread. This is a common behaviour that can be observed in fish and birds.

Many thanks Lucas!

On daily basis we come across images that are built using various code techniques, whether this be pixelation, glitch, particle fields, swarms, reaction diffusion, looking that these images on Wired Science, it’s amazing to see the similarities between the works we create and the environment we inhabit. Even more apparent when we consider that they bare no correlation to one another and the large gap in scale that exists between them. Likewise, the images below appear strangely “Digital”…

Agriculture is one of the oldest and most pervasive human impacts on the planet. Estimates of the land surface affected worldwide range up to 50 percent. But while driving through the seemingly endless monotony of wheat fields in Kansas may give you some insight into the magnitude of the change to the landscape, it doesn’t compare to the view from above.

A quaternion Julia set is a four-dimensional equivalent of the standard two-dimensional fractal. By taking a 3D ‘slice’ through the 4D space it is possible to visualise a solid fractal.

This quaternion Julia set ray tracer is a port of Keenan Crane’s Cg GPU implementation for Adobe Pixel Bender and a more general GLSL shader patch for Quartz Composer. The Pixel Bender version lets you render out high resolution images in Photoshop CS4 (or animate the parameters in After Effects). The Quartz Composer patch lets you animate any parameter in real-time.

Very impressive.
