Few months ago Berg posted concept material for Suwappu, their toy design project with Dentsu. The project is based around woodland creatures that talk to one-another when you watch them through your phone camera, a form of AR. Whilst still only a concept at that time, Matt Webb has posted latest details on Berg’s blog including the iPhone app internal beta, where you can see Deer and Badger talk as you play with them. The app was developed by Zappar, whose AR technology brought Suwappu to life. Interesting feature but not new to CAN readers is camera recognition of objects without QR codes using only the faces design of objects the camera is looking at.

The real jewels of the Suwappu project are the stories that happen between these toys inside this new environment, one that moves around and behind the toy as you pan around the characters. As Matt describes:

Seeing the two characters chatting, and referencing a just-out-of-camera event, is so provocative. It makes me wonder what could be done with this story-telling. Could there be a new story every week, some kind of drama occurring between the toys? Or maybe Badger gets to know you, and you interact on Facebook too. How about one day Deer mentions a new character, and a couple of weeks later you see it pop up on TV or in the shops.

“Sometimes it seems as if I were looking at myself from the outside. As if the imaginary camera eye moved away from first person view to third person view. I think it is an error in perception. Brain creates reality in itself after all and senses are only reference points for its creation. But I know what a feeling it is. It is as to look at the whole chaos of life from from above and to feel the line around which new events spring up. It is a united line which is the median of everything that happens.”

The interface by Boris Vitázek uses kinect as input via vvvv. The piece represents the first version of software that Boris plans to evolve into a more complex type of performance. Boris also sees it as something that could be a musical instrument which includes a combination of object and body control.

The piece originated from the impulse at kinect workshop in progressbar and it was displayed as an output of this workshop at the festival Multiplace 2011 in Bratislava.

Created by Operton and Erik Loyer, Strange Rain turns your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch into a skylight on a rainy day. Raindrops fall and splatter on your screen, shifting perspective as you tilt your device. Touch the screen and guide the path of the raindrops, stepping through the notes of an eerie melody as you go. It’s a relaxing, intriguing experience that feels as if you’re holding a living window in your hands.

The more you touch, however, the more strange the rain becomes: layered skies, visual anomalies and shifts in speed and color, even the occasional cataclysm if you’re not careful. Before your eyes and beneath your fingers, the familiar becomes strange, and the strange, familiar.

Strange Rain has three play modes. In “wordless” mode, you can simply enjoy the sights and sounds of the falling rain. In “whispers” mode, touching the screen causes some raindrops to turn into words as they fall—words inspired by the qualities of rain. In “story” mode, every touch triggers a thought as text on screen which tell the story of a man in the midst of a family crisis who has wandered into the rain to collect his thoughts.

“We’re combining comics, games, music, and touch- and gesture-sensitive devices to create a fresh kind of storytelling we call “opertoons.” Operton

Platform: iPhone/iPad (Universal)
Version: 1.0
Cost: $1.99
Developer: Operton

SILICA-ESC is a generative movie that portrays possible computing platform for the future. The story takes place in Singapore, where the decision about massive production of the new computing platform – SILICA-ESC is about to be made. The protagonists challenge the emerging supercomputer with issues like: class segregation, rules of art making, and spirituality. These questions seem like they are very important for the future developments of the global IT sector. Also, they are considered to be the most difficult ones and challenging for the super computer. But, SILICA-ESC responds with ease. By emitting audio, visual and scent impulses, she mesmerizes her first public users.

New submission to the Experimental Gameplay Project (‘Art Game’ theme) is the new game by Cactus titled This is Infinity. The game is 3d first person glitch like experience “meant to put you in a state of confusion, where you feel lost and alienated from the world you enter. You have to explore your own perception to figure out what you’re seeing, what you’re doing, and what will lead you to progress”.

More details about the game from Cactus:
To summarize the game: Find four portals, figure out what to do after you enter each portal, then figure out how to get to the end. The objective in each area is fairly simple, but because of the way the game is presented it can be hard to figure out. Observe the elements you see in each level to get a clue to what is actually going on, and you’ll probably be able to beat the game relatively quickly.

(Windows Only)

You can download the game here and once you have had a play make sure you also check out other Cactus’ games.

Made in less than a week and submitted to Experimental Game Project Art + Game theme, Every Day the Same Dream is a game by Pittsburgh based Paolo Pedercini.

From the Artist
“Every day the same dream” is a slightly existential riff on the theme of alienation and refusal of labor. The idea was to charge the cyclic nature of most video games with some kind of meaning (i.e. the “play again” is not a game over). Yes, there is an end state, you can “beat” the game.

TRAUMA tells a story of a young woman who survives a car accident. Recovering at the hospital, she has dreams that shed light on different aspects of her identity – such as the way she deals with the loss of her parents. TRAUMA lets you experience those dreams in an interactive way, reminiscent of Point-and-Click Adventure Games. Technology similar to that of Microsoft’s PhotoSynth it builds upon the established formula by introducing a gesture-based interface, real-time 3D technology for dynamic level layouts, unique photographic visuals and a level design philosophy that focuses on creating a rich experience rather than an elaborate puzzle challenge.

TRAUMA will be released by the end of 2009. It will be available for free. It is playable in most Web browsers compatible with the Adobe Flash plug-in. A downloadable version will be available for a small fee. There will also be a more comprehensive edition available on a physical medium.

Credits:
TRAUMA was designed and deveoped by Krystian Majewski.
Music and sound effects were done by Martin Straka.
