Created by David Dalmazzo, Dazzled Project is an attempt to compose a generative particle environment that could at the same time create structures and sounds. The application uses both MaxMSP and Cinder via OSC bridge allowing sounds generated from max be fed directly into Cinder app which generates the visuals.

I would like to program patterns and physics simulations with the aim to compose music structures that has a direct representation on a formal shape. One of the influences for this project was some examples that Robert Hodgin like Solar Rework. But in this case the idea is not to have a sound reactive visuals, but visuals that create a generative sound and music compositions.

David writes that the videos below are just the first part of the project. He is also planning to add rhythmic patterns based on constant rebounds or elastic connections between particles. Dazzled Project was supported by Generalitat de Catalunya.

We are happy to announce that after only 2 day review at Apple, new CAN app is now available in the AppStore. Created in collaboration with Francis Lam aka dbdbking, Voidie is an abstract depiction of the Great Void which uses a sound reactive particle system illustrating the activity around it. The app also functions as an audio visualizer and a clock. Double tap to toggle the Clock interface displayed using beautiful particle clusters. Use the multi-touch interface you can create your own audiovisual expressions or just position your iPad or iPhone near the speaker to see visuals come alive.

Francis Lam aka dbdbking was blogged on CAN a number of times. We first got to know his work through Bitboxland, half soundtoy, half game, it is a a unique and joyful audiovisual playground. Cloudie was the follow up, one again a simple beatbox game inspired by the little clouds at the corner of db-db.com. We also loved Goldfish Music Box, inspired by his own art installation that tracks movement of fish and turns them into sound, this app was the iPhone version that allows you to converts color into music. How could we also forget the range of apps inspired by Francis’ web art project nudemessenger.com including AskNumen, Numen Camera and Tap Numen. Many inspiring apps and we are very happy to have him onboard.

Lukasz Karluk aka julapy has been doing some interesting experiments with openCV. To start, he wanted to play with some basic shapes and since he was doing all this in work downtime he felt a little obliged to use the agency‘s logo. The end result in an interesting collage of both motion tracking, delaunay triangulations and particle effects generated by motion in front of camera (see videos below).

The two interactive demos included below use openCV for the camera interaction. He writes:
1) first step is to work out the frame differencing, basically taking away the last two frames in the camera stream and working out the difference in the image. its a way of allowing the camera to see movement.
2) next step is to work out the common area of intersect between the movement image and the holler logo. by applying the & operator, both images are checked for common areas containing white pixels.
3) contour analysis is then applied on the common area of intersect. it searches out all the white blobs in that image and returns the result as a series of points which when connected show an outline of the blobs and mathematically describe what each blob/shape looks like.
4) now that each white blob is described as a bunch of points, that data can be passed to a delaunay triangulation algorithm which calculates the triangles necessary to fill that shape.
5) finally optical flow is used to add velocity to the box2d elements.

Read the full post on his blog with detail descriptions of each step.

YMYI (You Move You Interact) is an interactive installation created by João Martinho Moura, to create a connection between the physical and the projected. The project aims to explore a spatial sphere, where the user/performer is invited to develop his own creative inspiration based on his own body gestures and movements. Inspired by the work of António Damásio, installation plays with the ideas of mental patterns we create of first and third person experience.

The custom particle effects application was created using Processing. The project has been exhibited at a number of events as well as used in theatrical performances.

João is a interactive media artist and a software designer in the area of multimedia and information systems. He worked in several projects in fields of education, media, entertainment, telecommunications and health industries, in Portugal, Israel, France and United Kindom. His interests are focused in intelligent interfaces, digital art and music. You can read more about João by visiting his website (www.jmartinho.org).

Inspired by the loophole in the rendering stage of openGL, Musophobia for the iPhone is an application that allows you to draw using a particle cluster of brushes.

Instead of a single brush like you would expect in other drawing applications, you wield up to 999 particle-brushes at once. Instead of using the brushes as you would expect traditionally, you instead merely interact with them: set them in motion on different trajectories, force them to fall, orbit on random centers, spin around the point of touch, collapse into a cluster or, simply, disturb by touching them. Particles can be modified to create different effects. Musophobia includes many options including changing particle size, color, recovery speed and interaciton sensitive options such as hue change speed or spin radius.

As the author points out, Musophobia was never meant to be a user-friendly application:

Musophobia takes away the full control of the users and reduces them to one of many parameters those bring life to the particles. In order to create, it forces you to cooperate. Musophobia is hard to master and most likely to frustrate.

A great new addition to the particle effect apps we review on CAN. What makes this app quite unique is the results you can achieve. From even the most traditional drawings to very complex particle compositions.
