Few months ago Flightphase were brought to this project by HUSH Studios as an Art and Technology Director to create, in collaboration with HUSH and 160over90, the image-based responsive environment at the University of Dayton.
In collaboration with Rump-Recordings, Futura Epsis 1 (the collective behind GRID) have just released QDD, an iPhone game and music promo for Quasi Dub Development’s newest LP “Limousine to the Guillotine”.

The app combines game mechanics with unlockable tracks featuring remixes from artists like Thomas Knak aka Opiate, Jason Forrest , Kim Hiorthøy, Guido Möbius and Loopspool (Tied + Tickled Trio). Task in the game is to destroy enemy cells by firing particles from your own cells. As you fire the particles your cells reduce in size which can then be merged by applying multitouch to the screen. Each enemy cells has a lifeline and they also fire back. As you complete the level, next level and remix unlock.

“The Company” is the latest project by Andrea Cuius and Roland Ellis commissioned by Bring To Light Festival NYC. A suspended surface of 76 tungsten lamps form a catenary arch, playing host to live performances and revisiting the sounds of the 19th century East River industrial icons.

The piece intends to bring back an atmosphere informed by the architectural legacy, a machine being delivered to occupy the space that was once a bustling industrial environment. By either producing sounds or just reactive to the inputs from the environment, The Company is a sound reactive light installation.

Created by onformative, studio founded by Julia Laub and Cedric Kiefer in Berlin, Actelion Imagery is an application built for Actelion, a biopharmaceutical company that researches, develops and markets medicines for diseases that still lack adequate treatments. Project brief was to create a new identity for their brand without touching the logo, but in keeping with Actelion activities. The team developed a custom Processing application that builds on a range of algorithms to generate both still and animated assets for brochures and website.

The new imagery is based on the smallest possible unit: digital molecules. These capture the magical moment when new medicine arises from molecules; innovative design for a company that supplies the world with innovations. We worked closely together with Interbrand in creating the graphic imagery and developed a tool for automatic image generation that enables the generation of a unique, in-itself homogeneous graphic image world out of heterogeneous visual material.

Currently on display at the National Maritime Museum is a collaboration between United Visual Artists (UVA) and Cape Farewell, an installation High Arctic. This is an exhibition with no touchscreens, no static photographs, and no panels with text: instead High Arctic is an immersive, responsive environment. As you approach the entrance you are given an ultraviolet torch, met by darkness and an overwhelming array of columns of varying height occupying the space. Ultraviolet torches unlock hidden elements whilst constantly shifting patterns of interactive projections react to visitors approaching.
Peter Kernel asked Andreas Gysin to build an interactive video for their upcoming album. The result, and although unfinished and missing some of the elements Andreas originally planned for, is a wonderful play of particles, typography, music and interaction.

Andreas writes on his blog:
It was fun to rewrite the particle engine I was working on and to test different behaviors and colorings. I tried to overcome the “organic” feel of force driven systems with grid snapping and other “smart” distribution rules. It was interesting to sync the sound to the animation. I also tried to sync videos with a constant framerate to the main system: it worked quite well but later I abandoned the whole idea of working with video feeds. The main idea was to visualize the word-lists in the song but I didn’t want to introduce a font directly into the scene so it was kind of obvious to form words with the particles… as in any dot-matrix display. Oh and the particles: simple (bitmap-cached) circles. I tried different shapes and always came back to a plain circle. But in a moment I tested with donut kind of shapes and the result was simple but interesting:

The only part where I had time to implement the sum of those shapes was in the beginning sequence.

These are recent experiments by Alvin C, working with OpenGL/GLSL Bloom & Blur filters in Processing. The demos feature Alvin generating interesting complex structures from simple behaviours/rules. He writes:

This exercise experiments with a particle field where different forms may emerge as a result of interactions between particles. These forms are created by connecting particles into clusters. Each particle is aware of where and which cluster it is connected to and explicitly identifies itself through colour.

Created by Abstract Birds and Quayola, Partitura is a custom software for creating realtime graphics aimed at visualising sound. The term “Partitura” (score) implies a connection with music, and this metaphor is the main focus of the project. The main characteristic of the system is its horizontal linear structure, like that of a musical score. It is along this linear environment that the different classes of abstract elements are created and evolve over time according to the sound.

Partitura defines a coherent language of its own for the creation of new contemporary abstractions. It is within this system that Partitura creates worlds that expand from a single dot to multiple galaxies, from minimalism to complexity, from rigid to elastic, from solid to liquid, from angular to smoothness, from tentative to boldness, from calm to agitation, from slow to fast, from desaturated to saturation, from dark to lightness, from predictable to unpredictability. Literally ‘everything’ and its opposite… just like a musical flow

Partitura has been developed mainly using VVVV, with an additional custom Max4Live audio analysis plugin. The Partitura 3D world is guided by a spline-driven bones structure where all the modules refer to. These include Splines, Particles and Meshes. Each module has many controllable parameters that can be linked to OSC inputs from the audio analysis or MIDI sequencer/controller. The analysis is run in Ableton Live and sent over OSC via ethernet.

General modules’ features include Multilayered hierarchic realtime management system, attractor/spring simulation, advanced spline-surface constrain for all the visual elements, Smooth resampled surfaces by GPU and GPU Particle system. Render techniques include SSAO, HDR and Tone-Mapping, Luma Adaptation, Cubemap illumination, Depth of Field, NormalMaps, bloom, MRT and Post effects for grading and corrections. Audio analysis includes amplitude, beat detection, bonk, Mel scale, FFT and pitch. Finally the Setup: Render > Workstation, Control/Analysis > Laptop and 3x BCF MIDI Controllers.
