“The Company” is the latest project by Andrea Cuius and Roland Ellis commissioned by Bring To Light Festival NYC. A suspended surface of 76 tungsten lamps form a catenary arch, playing host to live performances and revisiting the sounds of the 19th century East River industrial icons.

The piece intends to bring back an atmosphere informed by the architectural legacy, a machine being delivered to occupy the space that was once a bustling industrial environment. By either producing sounds or just reactive to the inputs from the environment, The Company is a sound reactive light installation.

Nabit lets you capture action sequence photos with your iPhone. The next time your buddy nails a switch inward heel or your dog snags a Frisbee mid-air, Nabit and share it on Facebook and Twitter.
2SLEEP1Â is a playlist of audiovisual performances in text mode, designed to make you fall asleep. The idea is to show the music being composed in real-time along with typewriter-style animations.

Both the music interface and the graphics are built up from text symbols. This means that the (graphical) objects can work together with the (musical) instructions, on a visual level. Vank is a first rough test of this and Matsamöt makes a similar thing, without the improvisation. Finally, Echidna is a silent movie with semi-live music.

Inspired by the neo-dadaist collages of Robert Rauschenberg, about a year ago James Alliban decided to write software which would allow him to quickly paint using using a webcam. In March this year, when the iPad 2 was released with both a front and back facing camera, James saw this as an opportunity to make a mobile version.

Composite allows you to remix your surroundings to create compositions. Users can paint pictures using live video stream by simply pointing their iPad towards your subject drawing over it. A variety of control over the brush and video stream is offered to allow for a range of different aesthetics. These include brightness, contrast, colour offset, alpha, blur and thickness.

Six-Forty by Four-Eighty is an interactive lighting installation designed to reveal the materiality of computation by recontextualizing the common pixel. Composed of two hundred and twenty magnetic pixel-tiles in a darkened room, Zigelbaum + Coelho have created each pixel able to be touched, moved, and modified.

At the start of the day the pixel-tiles are packed together as a display and by the end of the day they will have migrated across the walls in the room. By transposing the pixel from the confines of the screen and into the physical world, focus is drawn to the materiality of computation itself and new forms for design emerge.

The team have developed a new technology that makes the glass in the pixel-tile sense touch as well as send information through your body when you are touching it. They had to create our own composite glass and case for that. In general, each tile can also receive incoming IR data so you can control it with a remote. They are battery powered and can last for up to two weeks on a single charge if they are constantly on. Holding down on the tile will make it pulse. Touching another tile will let you copy the colour of first tile onto the second one. The pixels can only talk to each other through your body, ie combining for example colours to create new colours or touching two tiles at the same time will copy third colour onto the new tile. They also work with a remote allowing you to cycle through colours from distance.

Materials: Injection Molded ABS/Polycarbonate, Glass, Light Emitting Diodes, Custom Electronics, Microcontroller, Embedded Software, Stainless Steel.

The team are publishing a paper with more detailed technical information at the end of the month so do keep an eye on the project’s website.

Designed by Marcelo Coelho and Jamie Zigelbaum, with the assistance of Joshua Kopin. Made in collaboration with the Fluid Interfaces Group, MIT Media Lab.
