Last September, GML group launched The GML Field Recorder Challenge. The project was an invitation to artists and hackers to design a DIY hardware and software solution for unobtrusively recording graffiti motion data during a graffiti writer’s normal practice in the city. The winning project would receive 1,200 euros.

Earlier this year, our guest writer and contributor Joshua Noble took on the challenge by creating a custom piece of hardware for recording graffiti tags that costs no more than $170.97 or 126.81 Euros. The setup is simply based around using an optical mouse that knows how it’s being tilted. The ultra-bright LED was installed to ensure that the mouse can read properly off the wall, a combination of special lenses, acrylic cut casing, batteries, SDCard slot, Teensy++ board, and a bunch of wires. Once you have your tagged data saved on the SDCard, it’s easy enough to use it in one of freely available GML processing/openFrameworks apps to visualize or cut templates.

<del datetime="2010-09-28T21:29:08+00:00">Currently in development and </del>Created by Mothership, Kinetic is a GPS-based tracking and training app for running, cycling, hiking, walking… designed specifically to help you measure, record, store, review and analyse your location based data. Packaged in a beautiful interface with features to amaze and only grow with time, Kinetic is/will be a must for every iPhone. Guys at Mothership sent us an ad-hoc and although I am not a big runner myself, this is an app that I will want to use for all my location based activities and in the future I hope much more…

Because Kinetic is module based, ie your mix and match different modules according to your preference and activity, you are able to build you own perfect tracker. Included are time, distance and location which allows you to keep track of your time and distance covered, and see the route you’re on with live mapping and real-time markers. Speed and pace display average speed and pace, and lets you view live speed history graph to monitor your progress. Also included are altitude and compass which display current altitude and ascent/descent rates over both distance and time as well as an altitude history graph. Things don’t stop here. The team is hard at work to release the 1.0 version and at the same time excited about the endless possibilities that can be included in the future. Some of these will include full on Marathon training packs, audio and customisable training plans as well as ways to output data with all the recorded time and location to use as you like whether this be for art projects or else.

Another feature of Kinetic is the ability to change the app style. Kinetic comes with a number of styles preloaded, including Dashboard – which is designed specifically for night time use and comes in a number of alternative flavours. Of course, the team will add more styles with future app updates.

<del datetime="2010-09-28T21:29:08+00:00">The app was submitted to the AppStore three days ago and should be available within a week or two.</del> – Now Available. Included also is the lite version, ad supported which allows you to transfer your data to the full version once you are ready to make the jump. The full version will be available for $2.99 (for a limited time).

Mothership was established in 2010 by Stuart Eaton, Nick Hingston and Tim Juby to develop and build intelligently designed software that meets the highest of standards and are enjoyable to use. We care about getting the user experience right. We believe in making software that serves a purpose, making sure that it is as functional, engaging and as simple to use as possible. Creativity and innovation shaped by good design.

Pachube is a web service that enables you to store, share & discover realtime sensor, energy and environment data from objects, devices & buildings around the world. Founded by Usman Haque, architect and director at Haque Design + Research, Pachube is a culmination of 12 years of ongoing work. In a nutshell, Pachube is a little like YouTube, except that, rather than sharing videos, Pachube enables people to monitor and share real time environmental data from sensors or devices that are connected to the Internet. These do not only have to be environmental but also personal, such as weight, mood and many more ideas on how to use Pachube available here. Pachube makes it as simple as possible to build applications, products and services that bridge physical and virtual worlds. Using extensive API documentation, Pachube is easy to use with Processing, Java, openFrameworks, Ruby, Perl, and many other programming languages as well as hardware platforms such as Phidgets and Arduino.

Pachube adds value to physical interconnectivity: it’s not just about datastreams, but about the environments that make up the datastreams.

Last week, Data Logger, the official Pachube iPhone app was released in the App Store (free). Data Logger for iPhone enables you to store and graph any data of your choosing along with a timestamp and geolocation. You might use Data Logger to store electricity meter readings, to create maps of pollution or temperature sensor readings around your neighbourhood, or animal sightings around the city. You can also set up custom data feeds, with user-defined min and max values, tags, description and units. For more apps, including Android, see apps.pachube.com

To use the web service or the application on the iPhone you will need an account. For now, Pachube is in a private beta and to sign up you will need an invitation code, available either from friends using Pachube or by emailing beta [ at] pachube [ dot ] com with a couple of lines about what you would like to do with Pachube. Unfortunately we did not receive any invites with our account so if you are really interested in Pachube drop the team an email.

Project key members include: Usman Haque, creative director, Sam Mulube, technical producer, website development, Chris Leung, EEML developer and Ai Hasegawa, designer.

Amphibious Architecture is a floating installation in New York waterways that glows and blinks to provide an interface between life above water and life below. It was developed by the Living Architecture Lab at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and the Environmental Health Clinic at New York University, and it was commissioned for Toward the Sentient City by the Architectural League of New York.

Two networks of floating interactive tubes, installed at sites in the East River and the Bronx River, house a range of sensors below water and an array of lights above water. The sensors monitor water quality, presence of fish, and human interest in the river ecosystem. The lights respond to the sensors and create feedback loops between humans, fish, and their shared environment. An SMS interface allows citizens to text-message the fish, to receive real-time information about the river, and to contribute to a display of collective interest in the environment.

Instead of treating the rivers with a “do-not-disturb” approach, the project encourages curiosity and engagement. Instead of treating the water as a reflective surface to mirror our own image and our own architecture, the project establishes a two-way interface between environments of land and water. In two different neighborhoods of New York, the installation creates a dynamic and captivating layer of light above the surface of the river. It makes visible the invisible, mapping a new ecology of people, marine life, buildings, and public space and sparking public interest and discussion.

BugMirror, created by Oriol Ferrer Mesià , is a screen saver for Mac that uses camera input to mimic swarms of housands of little bugs.

The bugs react to camera input, trying to mimic what the camera sees. They are free to walk around and change their color. This creates a low-precision slow-reacting mirror, giving it a very organic and unique feeling (see video below).

Every single Bug thinks locally, reacting to its surroundings. But by having thousands of them, all thinking on their own, makes the whole bug community work as a single entity.

BugMirror is available for Mac only. It is free to download demo version but if you intend to use it you will need to pay 7.99 euro for the full license which will be emailed to you upon purchase.

“Let It Sleep” records you talking in your sleep. Turn “Let It Sleep” on and sleep, and it detects and records your talking in sleep automatically. Check out the record next morning, see what gibberish you might have been up to in the night. Of course, if you don’t talk in your sleep this will have no use but a fun tool never the less.

The developer also suggests to connect your iPhone to the power supply and turn-off the lock as otherwise the app will be interrupted. This also applies in case you receive phone while this app working.
