Broken Brothers Deluxe is a free indie strategy game available to download at www.spyeart.com. Submitted for this years IGF, Broken Brothers is one of my favourites to win. Somewhat goth/russian constructivist aesthetic strategy game, with a good mix of what you’d expect including unlocking units, fighting across insane terrain, levelling up by expanding across the map, and building an air force to rule the sky.

What may appear as an ordinary shooter, once you have loaded the game and have had a go at few levels, it turns out that besides having to destroy the incoming missiles, your attacks have to be planned and strategic. With every attack your arsenal is depleted slightly so endlessly shooting at the missiles will not help. Of course, if have depleted your arsenal a more precise hit is necessary but this is extremely difficult. Considering that it may take time to again replenish your arsenal your attacks need to be planned so you can take out as many incoming missiles as possible with a single hit. What is also great is that the explosions have a chain reaction effect so if you take out one missile it may also destroy another in it’s proximity. Timing and location of your anti-air missiles play an essential part in you progress to next level.

As you progress through the game, new power-ups and challenges are unlocked in the challenge screen. Complete all levels and all challenges to finish the game. As we have only started playing the game earlier today, we are quite excited to see what is coming next. For now we have reached level 14 and have obtained one power-up which replenishes your arsenal with the right swipe on the screen. This comes in pretty handy when you are being attacked by large number of missiles. What is missing is some form of indication how long you have before you finish the current level but other than that the game is a lot of fun.

Red Sky is a great little shooter. Both challenging and beautifully designed,  the game provides enough fun to make $0.99 investment well worth.

The goal, like in other types of these games, is to stop the invaders from getting through the board. What differentiates Retro Defense from Fieldrunners (game we reviewed few weeks back) is that the retro look does give the game a more analytical/strategy feel. It is slightly concerning that at times the game can be quite slow but we hope this is going to be addressed in the future releases. Nevertheless, the game is pretty solid and it is a real pleasure, both for the eye and the ear, watching your towers successfully take out incoming invaders. 

You know the path they’ll take, so you have to spend your money wisely and build the right towers. Each tower type has it’s own benefits and weaknesses, and there are bonus towers and freeze towers to slow down the invaders and help you destroy them. Tower placement is key, as well as planning properly to not get caught by the wrong color of invader.

-15 levels, from easy to nearly impossible, each worth hours of play
-Laser, Missile, Shockwave and Freeze tower types
-3 types of tower in each main tower type
-10 levels of upgrade for each tower
-6 invader types
-Range, Power and Double bonus towers, earned by killing special invaders
-Authentic retro sound effects

Fieldrunners has been voted one of the best games this year but if you are a fan of retro gaming, Retro Defense is a great alternative offering more levels and gameplay variety.

The game begins simple but as you build towers to take out waves of combatants, they become more fierce and you have to respond quickly by upgrading / replacing your towers. A game can take anything from 15 min to half hour depending what level you are capable of reaching. The more forces you take out, the more money you earn to buy new towers or replace or upgrade your old ones. You may also need to reposition some , realizing that maybe your early strategy does not work as well as you might have hoped.

Fieldrunners’ visuals remind of beautiful PC strategy games available on the market today. Unfortunately, we can not help but think of it as a single level game. This is not to say that the single level doesn’t offer enough challenges but the environment can get a little tiresome. It would be great to see more environments, tower upgrades and landscape options in the future updates. Another feature we are missing greatly is the sound. The game is totally silent, not something you would expect from such visually rich environment.

For the current price of $4.99 this is slightly a little less of a game than you would expect. Nevertheless, this a beautiful game that deservers all the attention it can get.

Beautifully designed, Enso•Dot is a good example of non-standard iphone interface sculpted to provide engaging experience. Not your usual ‘connect the dots’ type game, Enso•Dot is both challenging and delightful.

With regular balancing and other major updates such as custom maps, Weewar is showing true strategy game maturity. This is evident in it’s continuing success attracting many new players and by its great and very helpful community, 50,000 members strong.

Beautifully designed, using pixel style graphics, it’s a highly engaging and addictive game. Easy and quick to learn, you will soon find yourself eagerly awaiting your next move.
