Developed by NewMediology (Danqing Shi), Last clock is a clock app that uses popular slit scan technique to keep you in factual time, human time and remote time. Just like any other analog clock, the app has three hands: one for seconds, minutes and hours. The hands, however, are made of a slice of live video that gets scanned to the clockface. With different refresh rate for the three hands, the three time circles reflect the rhythms of the space at different temporal resolutions. The app also allows you to stream the last clock camera feed over the internet.

Thermochromic Clock by CW&T is a 4-digit 7-segment timepiece. Each segment in the display is made with a length of nichrome wire and then covered by a thick layer of black thermochromic paint. Time is displayed by applying voltage to the nichrome wire. As the wire sustains an electric current, it heats up the surrounding thermochromic paint, causing it to become transparent.

We are happy to announce that after only 2 day review at Apple, new CAN app is now available in the AppStore. Created in collaboration with Francis Lam aka dbdbking, Voidie is an abstract depiction of the Great Void which uses a sound reactive particle system illustrating the activity around it. The app also functions as an audio visualizer and a clock. Double tap to toggle the Clock interface displayed using beautiful particle clusters. Use the multi-touch interface you can create your own audiovisual expressions or just position your iPad or iPhone near the speaker to see visuals come alive.

Francis Lam aka dbdbking was blogged on CAN a number of times. We first got to know his work through Bitboxland, half soundtoy, half game, it is a a unique and joyful audiovisual playground. Cloudie was the follow up, one again a simple beatbox game inspired by the little clouds at the corner of db-db.com. We also loved Goldfish Music Box, inspired by his own art installation that tracks movement of fish and turns them into sound, this app was the iPhone version that allows you to converts color into music. How could we also forget the range of apps inspired by Francis’ web art project nudemessenger.com including AskNumen, Numen Camera and Tap Numen. Many inspiring apps and we are very happy to have him onboard.

Sure, there are plenty of slitscan projects out there and Golan has a very good page up on his blog how to go about doing some slitscanin’. Then, I came across this project on MAKE, created by Carl Rosendahl using his Canon 7D and programmed using C++ . It takes about a minute to create 100 frames of full resolution images, Carl describes. Video below best viewed at 720p, full screen.

Shot at the Fresno County Fair, October, 2010.

Inspired by Kazimir Malevich’s legendary painting “Black Square” (wiki), Quadratime is an abstract media artwork and experimental time display created by Carrois Type Design. Quadratime explores an alternative perception of time playing with the idea that the impression of time “passing by” is manmade. Quadratime distances itself from a purely linear perception of time and allows the user to perceive time as an area or a picture.

Quadratime translates a static picture into an endless abstract film. Emanating from Kazimir Malevich’s legendary painting “Black Square”, the film generates perpetual movement through a sequence of individual pictures. The degree of abstraction reached by Malevich is brought into the present using technical possibilities. Furthermore, the basic square form corresponds exactly to the smallest digital unit of image representation, the pixel, while the contrast between black and white is a direct translation of the binary foundation of digital technology. Quadratime’s basic time unit is predictable and alike for all people; the day. The black square area represents the duration of one day. All other units result as a division of the basic square into four equal square parts. The white square area denotes the present quarter of the day. In the first quarter of the day the white square is to the upper left, in the second quarter to the upper right, in the third to the lower right and in the fourth quarter of the day to the lower left. Thus a tangible image.

Quadratime’s fractal system is expandable into smaller or larger time periods. Using the iPhone zoom function, the day can be zoomed into or out of. The minimum time period available is 1/1.048.576 of a day, which roughly equates to a second. The maximum time period available for the QT1.0 version is 1.048.576, or about 2873 years. The fictional starting point of Quadratime is at 0.00 (Petrograd time) on the 19th December, 1915, as a reference to Malevich and the time and place of the exhibition opening in which Black Square was first presented.

Quadratime was first presented in 2004 at the “Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie” in Karlsruhe as part of the exhibition “Algorithmic Revolution – on the History of Interactive Art”. There are four differing tailor made special editions of Quadratime and one exclusive edition, that each can only be bought once.

Created by Andrey Yazev (the389), Nlug is a simple, beautiful and extremely addictive clock app made using openFrameworks. Included is a digital clock made of particles controlled by a physics engine. When the time changes particles explode and transform into new digits. You can control particles using your fingers as retractors. Up to five simultaneous touches are supported and their behaviour is based on Newton’s laws of motion and gravity.

Created by Florian Jenett ,”One Perfect Cube” consists of three synchronized clocks that form a sign every 12 hours for exactly one second, using Processing to simulate clock multiples to avoid collisions + formulate interesting geometrical compositions.

Florian writes:
When working with complex systems – which in a way a clock can be thought of as, looking at all it’s possible 43200 constellations within 12 hours – the main focus has to be put on finding or shaping the right development tools first. To be able to try different symbols and texts to embed into “One Perfect Cube” a custom layout software was built in Processing. It allows one to freely place, scale and adjust time on a multitude of clocks. Every time a clock is added or changed the software would check for possible collisions between the clocks and would arrange the clocks on different yet as few as possible layers to allow the hands of two clocks to pass one another. A virtual master clock can be used to test the sculpture at different times.

Designed by Mike Tucker, PopClock is a fun new clock app created using the Cocos2d framework. Time is laid out in the circles which from time to time ‘pop’ resulting in various collisions amongst other circles. Double tapping changes the colour of the clock and you can fully interact with the circles by touch and grab or tilt the device to move them up and down the screen – It’s kind of like an hourglass…except with multitouch, and maybe some electromagnetism thrown in there.

Mike explains:
PopClock is intended to be what i call a ‘passive’ app. It’s something that can be left on your iPad or iPhone while its sitting in the dock. It’ll tell the time in it’s own special way, and doesn’t really try to be anything more than that. For development, Cocos2d was used which simplifies a number of fairly annoying aspects of OpenGL development, few being the use of fonts, image loading, audio loading and playback. Cocos2d also provides a very easy way to implement box2d into your project, an open source 2D physics engine for games. All in all, cocos2d makes for a painless experience and having never used it before, the entire production process only took about 20 hours to complete.

We are very fond of Mike’s work here at CAN. Not so long ago we asked Mike to work together on one of his apps and the result was RetroScreen. If you haven’t tried it yet, see this post or download directly from the AppStore.
