Designing the Computational Image, Imagining Computational Design – An Excavation of Digital Form

“Designing the Computational Image, Imagining Computational Design” is an exhibition that excavates the foundation of computer-aided design and manufacturing and weaves together several ‘origin stories’ for contemporary consideration. The show recently closed after a seven-week run at the Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, and CAN was fortunate enough to get a guided tour with curator Daniel Cardoso Llach as it was winding down.

gr1dflow – Exploring recursive ontologies

gr1dflow is a collection of artworks created through code, delving into the world of computational space. While the flowing cells and clusters showcase the real-time and dynamic nature of the medium, the colours and the initial configuration of the complex shapes are derived from blockchain specific metadata associated with the collection.

Applications are now open for Antikythera’s Studio, which will host 15-18 international, interdisciplinary Studio Researchers from February to June 2023. The program is free and includes a housing provision and a monthly stipend of 4000 USD (or equivalent when not in Los Angeles). Created by Diogo Tudela, Athletics of Transcendence explores how traditional craftsmanship can appear to legitimise and provide depth to otherwise flat computational constructs.

The book is intended as an introduction to programming for designers and artists using the Processing language and environment, a language designed ‘by artists for artists’ and available as open source.

Created by Bryan Ma at Parsons, Definitions is a computational poetry installation made up of 15 networked LCDs that searches MIT’s ConceptNet to serve as a metaphor for the use of NLP in commoditizing human activity on the internet.

This exhibition at AA[n+1] in Paris of work by Satoru Sugihara includes a range of computational design works from built facade designs, agent-based architectural design studies to cellular growth algorithm researches.
