Amelia and the Machine – Choreography with autonomous moving systems

First in a series of investigations of creative human-robot teams led by Dr. Kate Sicchio (choreography) and Dr. Patrick Martin (robotics). It explores gestures of the robot arm as a starting point for a duet. Interacting through mimicry, timings and spatial patterns, this piece examines choreography beyond our own human bodies and how we begin to dance with machines.

Parhelia by Paul Prudence is a real-time A-V performance piece where sample based mechanical sounds are used orchestrate a family of concentric forms in space. The vvvv scenes suggest the workings of a imaginary machine where its component parts, or ‘gears’ interact with one an another triggering corresponding sounds.

First in a series of investigations of creative human-robot teams led by Dr. Kate Sicchio (choreography) and Dr. Patrick Martin (robotics). It explores gestures of the robot arm as a starting point for a duet. Interacting through mimicry, timings and spatial patterns, this piece examines choreography beyond our own human bodies and how we begin to dance with machines.

Created by Bjørn Karmann and Tore Knudsen, Alias is a teachable “parasite” that is designed to give users more control over their smart assistants, both when it comes to customisation and privacy.

Questioning our notions of wellbeing to develop innovative tools in the intersection of medical and social sciences, Giulia Tomasello investigates the potential of biotechnology and living materials, proposing a biological and sustainable alternative for electronic textiles and more.

The 2017 edition of Eastern Bloc’s Sight + Sound festival put ‘capital I’ innovation in its cross-hairs and pulled the trigger. We journeyed to Montreal to its flagship exhibition and assess its spectrum of ‘non-compliant futures.’

Julian Oliver’s latest hardware provocation is a fake cellular tower masquerading as an HP laserjet printer. The device evokes ubiquitous ‘StingRay’ surveillance technology and the real (fake) cell towers that pepper urban landscape.

Created by Steffen Hartwig, On the Secret Life of Things is a series of experimental prototypes that explore the new and ubiquitous things of daily life. Using familiar objects, the objects are repurposed, limited to their original function/behaviour but re-imagined for the age of information.

The Aurullia series are Tom Beddard’s interpretation of a fractal formula called Mandalay, a specific type of Mandelbox with additional parameters that allow scaling of the folding on individual axes, either in parallel or one after.

“The Crystal Line” is the latest work by critical engineer Julian Oliver. Re-creating an authentic crystal radio design that was used widely during WWI, the device broadcasts a transmission of ‘future of warfare’ chatter culled from various defence blogs that is translated from text to speech.

The latest two instalments of the *old works* by Lia include number 10 of the re-move.org and 21 pieces from the highly influential turux collection, both now available for the iOS.

The installation consist of moving lights that continuously illuminate space from different angles creating an intersections of form, perspective and shadow. In almost pure darkness the visitor is invited to explore the derelict space as details are illuminated and space reshaped.

Developed as a collaboration between Quayola & Sinigaglia, Dedalo is a collection of custom developed vvvv engines (and a toolkit) to generate, exchange and map data between a series of graphics modules and a rendering engine used for live performance.

Animalia and Caelum are two projects that take position that our idealisation, romanticism and paradoxical thinking in ecology is holding us back from finding new ways to interact with nature.
