Persistence of Vision – Subverting civil infrastructure

Persistence of Vision is a public installation that adapts recognisable civil infrastructure into an interactive experience. The project is a reaction to our current state of surveillance, be it self initiated or passive, by revealing an often overlooked or ignored component of our city, and plays on many emerging technologies that are fast embedded into our daily lives, such as AI and computer vision.

A knot in motion: on the accident of rain

Build upon the fiction of a knot tied between the two tropical lines along the Atlantic forest in Jundiaí (BR) and the tropical desert in El Kharja oasis (EG), the project gathers and ties together voices from artists based within the tropics speaking with and about the tropical rain through their local perspectives.

Vague Boundaries – Particles, lines, and waves

Created by Jonghong Park, Vague Boundaries explores ‘boundaries’ between matter and phenomena. The custom made machine draws straight lines continuously on the paper by snapping the thread with the mechanism of the chalk line tool.

Sol – An apparatus that depicts pathways of the sun

Sol is a custom made apparatus that can depict any position and any trajectory of the sun. Since the sun’s path changes every day, the exact path it takes through the sky depends not only on the date but also on the geographical location of the observer. Sol reveals the different pathways the sun takes from anywhere in the world.

Wetlands – A web-based interactive ecosystem, poetically visualising living data and user interactions

Wetlands is a poetic data visualisation using Lucy’s own brainwaves in response to material stimulation as a tool to ‘inhabit’ the identity, translated as a digital landscape. Developed in consultation with specialists in the field of neuroscience, a wearable headset was used to monitor electrical brain activity (EEG) and heart-rate through blood circulation (PPG), measuring…

Data Art-EMERGE turns traditional patent wall into realtime data painting for pingan’s exhibition centre

Commissioned by PingAn Technology, EMERGE designs and builds interactive experience based around company’s patent records, aiming to make the data touchable and memorable. Utilizing realtime rendering & creative programming tools as design medium, the installation is driven by particle simulations, where data is transformed and visualized with natural change of particle behaviors. 10000+ patents were…

PyroGraph – Drawing machine that listens and burns

Created by Bjørn Karmann in collaboration with Nicolas Armand and Lars Kaltenbach, Pyrograph is a CIID project inspired by the thermal printers used for receipts in all shops. The Pyrograph draws with dots burned with a 450 °C tip on to paper and listen to the ambient sound in the room and distort the same.

Created by Julius von Bismarck & Benjamin Maus, Round About Four Dimensions sculpture represents a “hypercube”, “four-cube” or “tesseract”, often cited in mathematical and physical theories to illustrate concepts beyond three spatial dimensions.

Drone Vision addresses questions of how visibility and verticality are intrinsic to drone technology and its meanings for artistic and political praxis.

Families of digital artificial lives that inhabit (micro-robotic) houses and reproduce on the blockchain.

Created by Mathias Maierhofer and Valentina Soana at the ICD, ‘Self-Choreographing Network’ is a project aiming to challenge the prevalent separation between (digital) design and (physical) operation processes of adaptive and interactive architectural systems.

Created by Richard Vijgen, ‘Hertzian Landscapes’ is a live visualization of the radio spectrum. It includes a digital receiver to scan large swaths of radio spectrum in near real-time and using Three.js visualises thousands of signals into a panoramic electromagnetic landscape.

Created by Kimchi and Chips and currently on view at the Somerset House in London, HALO is a new installation in the series of works by the Seoul based Mimi Son and Elliot Woods where light is sculpted to create form that exists between material and immaterial.

Created by Juliane Götz and Sebastian Neitsch of Quadrature and currently on view within the Ars Electronica exhibition at the DRIVE Volkswagen Group Forum in Berlin, “Positions of the Unknown” is an installation of 52 custom-made mini machines that, ever so slowly, track unidentified objects (possibly classified satellites) in Earth’s orbit.

Created by Julian Oliver and commissioned by the Konstmuseet i Skövde, HARVEST is a work of critical engineering and computational climate art. It uses wind-energy to mine cryptocurrency, the earnings of which are used as a source of funding for climate-change research.

AUDINT is a European artist collective working across animation, installation, and publishing. Drawing on excerpts from an extended conversation with the group, we unpack their vision of the dystopian future-present and the nether zones that can be conjured through sound and vibration.

Created by Marion Pinaffo & Raphaël Pluviange, ‘Papier Machine’ is a booklet gathering a family of 13 paper-made electronic toys ready to be cut, coloured, folded, assembled or torn.

Created by the Mediated Matter Group and the MIT Media Lab, GLASS II is the group’s most recent work in the area of 3D printing optically transparent glass now at architectural scale.

Entropic System is a drawing machine that inscribes ornate geometric patterns into a bed of ‘black beauty’ sand. Made by the Denver-based media artist Laleh Mehran the device has instability built-in to it, and creates a feedback loop where approaching it affects its output.

A meditation on several recent Troika projects that render cellular automata with dice and anodised aluminium rather than pixels on a screen. Realized over the last four years, these works demonstrate how a prolonged investigation into a rudimentary approach can yield rich dividends.

Interactive Architecture Lab founder Ruairi Glynn chats with CAN about the freshly-launched Design for Performance & Interaction (DfPI) programme at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.

Created by Berlin based Ralf Baecker, Random Access Memory is a fully functional digital memory. Instead of operating on semi-conducting components to represent either the binary states of 0 (zero) or 1 (one), the memory uses grains of sand as storage material.

Created by Diogo Tudela, Athletics of Transcendence explores how traditional craftsmanship can appear to legitimise and provide depth to otherwise flat computational constructs.

Created by Reza Ali, F3, [Form From Function], is a playful and powerful 3D design app that enables you to live code 3D form, rapidly iterate on its design, and export for 3D printing, rendering and animation. F3 uses signed distance functions (SDFs) to build forms – designing 3D forms using 2D image cross sections.

Our Time is the latest large-scale installation by United Visual Artists, investigating the subjective experience of the passing of time. The installation is comprised of 21 bespoke mechanical pendulums that swing at a pace apparently unhindered by the laws of nature and where no single time measurement applies.

Created by Fabio Carbone, Neural Evolution is a an experiment created in Processing that trains a Neural Network through a natural selection process (genetic algorithm) in a scenario where the only survival is food.

Created by Shohei Fujimoto, Power of One #Surface explores perception through reflection and position, where the visitor is invited to explore both the actual and reflected pattern which continuously changes according to the angle of reflective surfaces.
