Four Transitions – The (unstoppable) passing of time on the half a century of technological advancement

Created by Jürg Lehni for the collection of HeK – House of electronic Arts in Basel, ‘Four Transitions’ is an artwork about the passing of time. Together, four displays work in tandem to unveil the current time, with each unit taking one minute to compose one numeral, deploying visual compositions and choreographies that correspond to the nature and character of each technology.

Created at The Basel School of Design by the 1st year Visual Communication students, Laser Letters is a group project resulting from a short 6 day course providing an introduction and overview of topics in the realms of typography and media interaction.

The Visual Communication Institute in Basel offers internationally accredited curricula on the Bachelor, Master and PhD level reflecting the rich tradition of the Basel School of Design in particular and Swiss Graphic Design in general. The City of Basel, located in the trinational Rhine river valley, is a unique cultural environment with easy access to France and Germany.

Imagined as a tool to provide assistance to a conventional approach to sculpting, here an AI model is developed to seek out strategies that provide a constant improvement to how a given form is achieved. By feeding it with different tools, rules and rewards through reinforcement learning, the team steer the process revealing unpredictable outcomes.

Created by Jamie Zigelbaum, Triangular Series is a site-specific lighting installation composed of numerous, truncated tetrahedral forms. Each object has an unique form and senses the other and the physiological rhythms of visitors beneath them.

Marc De Pape’s “The Chime”, a complex assemblage of sensors that composes generative music from ambient environmental data.

User 632 is an installation that stores the behaviour of the people who look at it by monitoring them in return. It is designed to know when and how a person passes and stores information as data or ID dependant on proximity.

BNJMN is a “mobile sensory image production mechanism” with sole purpose to create original artworks by roaming in search of paper, painting whatever he wants, and signing it before he moves on to start the cycle again.
