Space Odyssey – Azure Kinect & TouchDesigner Powered Interactive Projection

Commissioned by GOFY, Hologrix’s Space Odyssey is an interactive installation that takes audiences on an immersive journey through outer space. We created three real-time generative scenes using TouchDesigner software and projected onto a 12-meter-wide canvas on the façade of a building. The installation uses Microsoft’s Azure Kinect device to track motion data of participants as…

Sol – An apparatus that depicts pathways of the sun

Sol is a custom made apparatus that can depict any position and any trajectory of the sun. Since the sun’s path changes every day, the exact path it takes through the sky depends not only on the date but also on the geographical location of the observer. Sol reveals the different pathways the sun takes from anywhere in the world.

Expressive Tactile Controls

Push buttons, sliders, switches and dials—we use such controls everyday and everywhere, but we barely notice them. Expressive Tactile Controls is a research experiment with a series of controls that are augmented by giving human personalities. What if each control had a unique personality and they could express its emotion only through haptic feedback? How…

Gysin&Vanetti – O is not a letter, it’s a circle

Gysin-Vanetti (Andreas Gysin & Sidi Vanetti) are an artist duo exploring images and patterns using the type geometries of multipurpose displays. What characterises the projects shown here is that their intention is to not modify the layout (or visual organisation) of the chosen hardware – they work with what the existing has to offer. Within these hard constraints they search for infinite visual permutation. Using only type and digit, Gysin-Vanetti build images, animations and generate patterns.

Markov Decisions – Sound as a physical property of matter

Created by Matteo Crivella, Markov Decisions is a generative audio system that combines random processes and sonic behaviours of matter. Data is created in Pure Data that drives the instrument through voice coil actuators putting the sheet of brass under stress and generating a tensional field in which the metal changes from one vibrating state to another, in relations to the input and its physical properties (mass, elasticity, morphology).

Guide to Projectors for Interactive Installations

Video projectors are one of the most important tools for creators of interactive installations. The information for projectors is available on various websites, but this 2 part guide will focus on their use in production and interactive environments.

The light installation ‘What is for Sure’ explores the relationship between space and time. By reinterpreting and manipulating the seemingly natural and chronological rhythm of light, the artwork addresses the phenomenon of chromatic changes in the sky caused by atmospheric scattering.

Livegrid is a harmonious blend of technology and art that brings environmental awareness right into your living space – now looking for support on Kickstarter.

Livegrid is a harmonious blend of technology and art that brings environmental awareness into your living space. Livegrid uses integrated sensors to gauge the temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels of your surroundings with a unique representation — an immersive aquatic ecosystem.

Since the sun’s path changes every day, the exact path it takes through the sky depends not only on the date but also on the geographical location of the observer. Sol reveals the different pathways the sun takes from anywhere in the world.

Created by Quiet Ensemble, ‘SOLE’ is a 360 degree video-mapping that, thanks to the use of 49 video projectors, simulates the movement of the sun around the inside the hall of the Salone degli Incanti in Trieste.

Created by Random Studio in collaboration with Arnout Meijer and RWA Electronics, the project is comprised of a lighting system in Random’s studio that emulates the movement of the sun and the ever-evolving states of natural light.

Passifolia is a collective experience, made-to-mesure for La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris and made up of 16 interactive modules organically set up in space.

This tutorial introduces you to FLIPDIGITS PLAYER, an algorithm sequencer and a collection of demo animations for a flipdigits display, coded in Processing.

As per tradition each year, December is when we look back at the amazing work published on CAN. From ingenious machines and installations to mesmerising experiences that leverage new mediums for artistic inquiry – we added scores of projects to CAN’s archive in 2019. Here are some highlights.

This past March, CAN joined forces with UAL Creative Computing Institute to present the first in a series of events that examine new forms of cross-disciplinary art and design practice. Entitled Document 1., the event was comprised of a workshop, seminar, and symposium, and took place at UAL’s newly refurbished Camberwell College of Art in London.
