As 2018 comes to a close, we take a moment to look back at the outstanding work done this year. From spectacular machines, intricate tools and mesmerising performances and installations to the new mediums for artistic enquiry – so many great new projects have been added to the CAN archive! With your help we selected some favourites.

Atlås – Guided, generative and conversational music experience for iOS

Created by Agoston Nagy, Atlås is an ‘anti game environment’ that generates music in a conversational cognitive space. The app includes automatically generated tasks that are solved by machine intelligence without the need of human input. Agoston questions ad infinitum (ability to continue forever), presence, human cognition, imagination, and more broadly corporate driven automatisms and advanced listening practices.

Drone Aviaries & Field Guides – A Conversation with Superflux

Superflux are a design and foresight consultancy based in London. Founded by Anab Jain and Jon Arden in 2009, the studio produces prototypes and films that are simultaneously prescient, and playful—and now they can add ‘magazine publisher’ to that list of outputs. A few weeks ago the studio announced the first edition of Superflux, a Warren Ellis-edited periodical that would mutate with each edition. The first issue is a handsome A1 poster expanding on their recent work with drones and the duo has engaged in an interview with CAN about their new project.

Motion Picture 2.0 – A New Recording Technology

In collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the ZKM has organized a competition within the Science Year 2014 – The Digital Society: all those interested are invited to experiment with this new technology developed by the ZKM.

Created by Refik Anadol, “Melting Memories” is a series of digital artworks that explore materiality of remembering by offering new insights into the representational possibilities of EEG data collected on the neural mechanisms of cognitive control.

XENOPTYX is a neo analog tryptic mechanical altarpiece utilising immaterials such as time and heat to create ephemeral traces on the three custom built augmented panels.

Between October 6th and 9th 2022, the 11th edition of the Patchlab Digital Art Festival will be held in Krakow.

The Patchlab Digital Art Festival kicks off on October 8th. The jubilee, tenth edition under the title GAME OVER will last three days, and the events will take place in parallel, stationary in Krakow and online.

From 24 May to 25 November 2018, in the framework the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s “Hors-les-murs” program, American artist Ian Cheng’s “Emissary Forks At Perfection” (2015-2016) is on display at the Espace Louis Vuitton Venezia.

Latest in the series of experiments and explorations into neural networks by Memo Akten is a pre-trained deep neural network able to make predictions on live camera input – trying to make sense of what it sees, in context of what it’s seen before.

The 2017 edition of Eastern Bloc’s Sight + Sound festival put ‘capital I’ innovation in its cross-hairs and pulled the trigger. We journeyed to Montreal to its flagship exhibition and assess its spectrum of ‘non-compliant futures.’

Created by Philipp Schmitt (with Margot Fabre), ‘Computed Curation’ is a photobook created by a computer. Taking the human editor out of the loop, it uses machine learning and computer vision tools to curate a series of photos from an archive of pictures.

Created by Stephan Bogner and Philipp Schmitt, Human Element Inc. investigates how crowdwork, such as Amazon MechanicalTurk, might be woven into everyday life in the future— and explores the topic through three speculative crowdwork services.

Created by Pedro Lopes, Doğa Yüksel, François Guimbretière, and Patrick Baudisch at the Hasso Plattner Institut, Muscle-Plotter is an assistive interface that allows hand-drawn computation using EMS muscles actuation.

Mesa Musical Shadows is a permanent “singing pavement” installation, designed by Montréal’s Daily tous les jours for the north plaza at the Mesa Arts Center in Arizona.
