CAN 2019 – Highlights and Favourites

As per tradition each year, December is when we look back at the amazing work published on CAN. From ingenious machines and installations to mesmerising experiences that leverage new mediums for artistic inquiry – we added scores of projects to CAN’s archive in 2019. Here are some highlights.

Dökk – Live media performance by fuse*

Dökk (‘darkness’ in Icelandic) is the new live-media performance by fuse* and the natural evolution of Ljós (‘light’). Dökk is about a journey throughout a sequence of digital landscapes where the perception of space and time is altered.

A collaboration between Daito Manabe (Rhizomatiks) and Kenichiro Shimizu (PELE) for Kazu Makino, ‘Come Behind Me, So Good!’ music video combines photogrammetry and mixed reality to create a seamless dream-like landscape, invigorated by Elevenplay performance.

Uncanny Rd. is a drawing tool that allows users to interactively synthesise street images with the help of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The project was created as a collaboration between Anastasis Germanidis and Cristobal Valenzuela to explore the new kinds of human-machine collaboration that deep learning can enable.

Developed by the team at the MIT Media Lab’s Mediated Matter research group, the following research demonstrates multimaterial voxel-printing method that enables physical visualisation of volumetric data.

Created by Refik Anadol, “Melting Memories” is a series of digital artworks that explore materiality of remembering by offering new insights into the representational possibilities of EEG data collected on the neural mechanisms of cognitive control.

Created by Luiz Zanotello, Habitat of Recognition explores the material dimensions of digital technologies by examining the intra-active tensions between the distinction and convergence of matter.

Dökk (‘darkness’ in Icelandic) is the new live-media performance by fuse* and the natural evolution of Ljós (‘light’). Dökk is about a journey throughout a sequence of digital landscapes where the perception of space and time is altered.

Created by NY based art and architecture collective Softlab, ‘Volume’ is an interactive cube of responsive mirrors that redirect light and sound to spatialize and reflect the excitement of surrounding festival goers.

The latest iteration of a decade-long investigation into modular construction systems by Canadian Artist Jesse Jackson, Marching Cubes is an algorithm-inspired syntax for building volumes from 3D printed blocks.

An output of the Office for Creative Research, OCR Journal #002 documents the process and philosophy of the Brooklyn-based studio specializing in complex data-informed projects.

Created by Simon Russell, animation director based in London, the following is a series of Houdini experiments where geometry is used as a way to visualise sound, and vice versa.

Metamaterials are engineered 3D cell grids that have properties that are not found in nature. Recently, a group of Hasso-Plattner Institute researchers (supported by a Shapeways educational grant) enhanced metamaterial design to include mechanical functionality.

An audiovisual installation by Matthew Biederman and Pierce Warnecke, Perspection is an anamorphic projection with directional sound that adjusts to a viewer’s position.

Gary James Joynes’ “Broken Sound” is an immersive video installation that ‘builds a world’ out of the frazzled remnants of speaker coils he destroyed through his ongoing cymatics research.

The latest work of Brighton-based artist researcher duo Semiconductor (Ruth Jarman & Joe Gerhardt) pulls back the shiny veneer of cosmology by collaging thousands of raw telescope images into a sculptural projection.

Patterns of Harmony is an installation comprised of animated fractal of cubes, without containing any physical cubes, rather the reflections and projections of them.

Commissioned by Caviar House & Prunier for London Heathrow Terminal 2, “Emergence” is a new light installation by London based Cinimod studio.

Created by the panGenerator collective, Macrofilm is a permanent interactive installation for The Museum of The History of Polish Jews that combines traditional, tangible experience of browsing through old archives with subtly augmented digital experience.

‘Your Line or Mine’ is an interactive installation in the Stedelijk Museum comprised of three continually changing crowd sourced animations drawn entirely by the museum’s visitors.

Project explores narratives through colour, line, and form found in geographic satellite imagery. Utilising Google Earth together with custom software, the final install spans over 27 HD screens pointing locations of the films that have been produced by IFP.

Through generative fabrication and computational design, this project aims to reconnect digital and physical contexts through a custom designed “chronomorphologic modeling” environment.

The software created was a gesture-based, “keyframeless” animation system, which uses soft-body dynamics to create motion in the same way you would with puppets – by literally grabbing bits of the 3D mesh and pulling it around with the mouse, and recording live.

Tactilu is a research project embracing remote haptic/tactile communication. The device takes a form of a bracelet capable of transmitting the touch between two individuals via bluetooth and internet connection provided by smartphones.

Created with love for all things retrofuture, Ming Mecca brings a comprehensive set of classic videogame design parameters at your fingertips.

In this social networking microcosm where the living, content generators, the dead, automated bots, spammers all share a peaceful coexistence, Matt Pearson questions his “other” self who speaks his language and says just the kind of things he would say.

Three things seem to surround us all the time and in great abundance: data visualization, audio visualization and mapping. The team behind TouchDesigner show you how to do all three things at once.

After 50 years of pointing and clicking, Studio Moniker are celebrating the nearing end of the computer cursor with a music video where all our cursors can be seen together for one last time.
