House Party – Scavenged, mechanical and synthesised orchestra

Created by Neil Mendoza during an artist in residence at Recology SF,  House Party is a musical installation that explores prized possessions in their native habitat. All the materials used to create this artwork, from the furniture to the computers, were scavenged from the discarded trash. The music is a mix of mechanical and synthesised sounds.

Abstract Ecologies – A Conversation with Amber Christensen

“There Should be Gardens” is the title of the 14th edition of InterAccess’s Emerging Artists Exhibition. Drawing on her research in feminist/queer curatorial and media arts practices, the exhibition is curated by Toronto’s Amber Christensen and showcases five Canadian early career artists whose practices address “the interconnectedness of technologies, ecologies, botanies, gender and the cosmos.” In aggregate the show’s selected works invoke elemental qualities, amplify and abstract natural materialities, and offer different modes of seeing and engaging the world. With the show winding down this week, CAN engaged Christensen in a Q&A to unpack the show’s framing and provocative works.

Created by a small team of architects turned game designers, Block’hood is a vertical city simulator with emphasis on ecology and decay. As a player, you take control of a neighborhood and develop your community within limited space. The challenge is provided by the requirements of the blocks you create, forcing you to satisfy the need of resources.

Heavens is a moving-image work and installation created using planetarium projection methods to overlay planetary footage with deep sea imagery, looking at deep space to see deep into the ocean.

Review of the exhibition last month at the Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea – a collection of 12 works questioning the essential meaning and significance of the data world.

Created by Michael Candy, “Synthetic Pollenizer” is a conceptual intervention in real-world ecological systems using artificial flowers. Inspired by natural pollenizers, these robotic replicas artificially pollinate bees, integrating into the reproductive cycle of local flora; an initiative into a cybernetic ecology.

Machine Art in the Twentieth Century is a recent MIT Press-published book by Andreas Broeckmann exploring ‘machinic’ art-making. CAN weighs in with a review of this survey of moments, movements, and key figures spanning futurism to the present day.

Strelka Institute for architecture, media and design launched the enrollment campaign for the postgraduate education program. The theme of the 7th academic year at Strelka is The New Normal.

Exploring behavior based design systems that are self-aware, mobile, and self-structure / assemble. The following is the work AADRL Spyropoulos Design Lab at the Architectural Association School of Architecture, in London.
