Persistence of Vision – Subverting civil infrastructure

Persistence of Vision is a public installation that adapts recognisable civil infrastructure into an interactive experience. The project is a reaction to our current state of surveillance, be it self initiated or passive, by revealing an often overlooked or ignored component of our city, and plays on many emerging technologies that are fast embedded into our daily lives, such as AI and computer vision.

InFoam Printing – 3D printing smart foam elements

Anachronic Landscapes – Automation and coevolution in nature

Created by the SCI-Arc faculty Curime Batliner and Jake Newsum in collaboration with Paralelo Architectos, Anachronic Landscapes is a robotic system that lives inside of an abandoned industrial structure overgrown by nature. The system executes its daily routine, nurturing the plants with water and fertilising it with fluorescent fluids. While the machine keeps the plants alive it simultaneously ignites a process of transformation forcing the plants to adapt to the new condition.

In this interview with Nils-Thomas Økland from AIR Sandnes, Kataria dives into how this traditional practice inspired him to create an audio-visual performance.

Anima is an interactive installation that facilitates a musical jam session between humans and machines. Operating much like a sequencer, Anima uses open-source AI algorithms to generate musical sequences.

Imagined as a tool to provide assistance to a conventional approach to sculpting, here an AI model is developed to seek out strategies that provide a constant improvement to how a given form is achieved. By feeding it with different tools, rules and rewards through reinforcement learning, the team steer the process revealing unpredictable outcomes.
